In late-May, dozens of Limousin bulls escaped from a farm in Stary Las (Opole Voivodeship). The herd then settled in the nearby Niemysłowicki Forest. Many attempts were made to capture or chase the animals back to the farm. Finally, the last two bulls that were still at large have been captured.
Two Limousin breed bulls, that were still running free, have been captured and transported back to the farm in Stary Las - Prudnik County chief veterinary officer Marek Wisła informed on Friday (June 17).
Run-away bulls
At the end of May, 33 Limousin breed bulls escaped from a farm in Stary Las. The herd would wander around the local fields and then settled in the nearby Niemysłowicki Forest. The situation was dangerous because the animals would scare easily and would not let anyone to approach them.
"The animals kept at a free-range farm are 'less domesticated' than the housed cattle," Marek Wisła told tvnmeteo.pl on May 29. "Once they escape a farm, they become half-wild animals. It's possible to approach them at 100 metres or so. But not closer," he added.
On Monday, May 30, it was announced that part of the herd had been captured, with the remaining 13 bulls still at large.
The following day, on May 31, Marek Wisła told tvnmeteo.pl about Monday's operation. "We asked the local riding clubs for help, and their members tried to chase the animals away from the forest," the veterinarian said. "The bulls wouldn't leave the forest though, so we decided to immobilise them using a Palmer gun with tranquilazer bullets," he added. Two bulls were captured thanks to this method.
All of the bulls have now been captured, although it was initially said that the whole process could take up even up to a few months.
