President of the European Council Donald Tusk commemorated on Tuesday protesters killed during 2013-2014 uprising as his visit to Ukraine coincided with the fifth anniversary of the deadliest days of the protest.
Tusk was accompanied by Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko.
The Maidan movement, which took its name from the central Kiev square where demonstrators gathered in late 2013, was a response to former Ukrainian President Victor Yanukovich rejecting a trade agreement with the European Union.
Yanukovich escaped Kiev in the final days of the uprising, which installed a pro-European leadership in the country followed by annexation of Crimea by Russia and a separatist conflict in the east.
During his visit, Tusk met Poroshenko and prime minister Volodymyr Groysman and also delivered a speech in the parliament.
