This is an important place for the royal family. Prince Charles himself is the patron of the theatre and it would not have been built if it were not for him.
Shortly after meeting Paweł Adamowicz, the royal couple came out on the raised terrace of the Artus Court, where they were greeted by crowds of Gdańsk residents and tourists, who had been waiting for them since morning. Everyone wanted to get a glimpse of the members of the royal family. After a short walk round the Neptune Fountain, Kate and William went to the Shakespeare Theatre. This is a special place for the British royal family. The Shakespeare Theatre was erected on the site of a former fencing school. In the evenings, Shakespeare's plays were staged here, even in the playwright's lifetime. The Prince of Wales, William's father, is the patron of the theatre. - This event is a capstone to the building's story, as it were. Prince Charles visited us to see the place where the theatre was to be built, and now his son William will be able to see it - said Professor Jerzy Limon, director of the Gdańsk Shakespeare Theatre.
They saw the theatre
The royal couple arrived at the theatre shortly after 16:00. They were welcomed by the director and the party went inside. The royal couple sat in the audience among children and saw a short performance.
Cream puffs, herring and bread with lard
The guests took part in a small party for representatives of the arts, culture and the Polish community in the UK. The TVN24 crew met with the chef, who prepared a lunch for the royal couple. All the dishes, though cooked according to traditional Polish recipes, were prepared from British ingredients.
- We prepared four different dishes. There are traditional pierogi, stuffed with British pork. The pierogi will be served with pickles and carrots. The vegetables came from Cambridge. We will also serve sourdough bread with lard cooked in milk with apple, garlic and thyme - said Damian Wawrzyniak, a Polish chef from the UK. There was more. The royal couple then sampled Baltic herring with apple, followed by a sweet dessert.
- It was a cream puff with fruit - said Wawrzyniak. The chef insisted that he had received no specific guidelines. Nearly a month ago he met with Kate and William to discuss "Polish-British culinary connections". A week ago he was asked to draft the menu. - I wanted to show off our national cuisine. I think these dishes are very representative of it - said Wawrzyniak.
