Polish services use tear gas and water cannon on migrants storming the border

Migrants trying to force their way into Poland attacked Polish soldiers with rocks and tried to destroy the fence at the border crossing in Kuźnica, the Ministry of National Defence said on Tuesday. "Our services used tear gas to quash the migrants' aggression," the ministry added. The footage from the border also shows Polish services using water cannons.

CJEU: Poland's rules for assigning judges violates EU law

The EU's top court ruled on Tuesday that Polish rules allowing the justice minister to assign judges to higher criminal courts or to remove them without stating reasons violated EU law. Poland's prosecutor general has asked the country's Constitutional Tribunal to rule whether regulations cited by the Court of Justice of the European Union for fines imposed on Poland are constitutional, the prosecutor's office told state news agency PAP on Monday.

Flash estimate: inflation in Poland highest in over two decades

Consumer prices in October 2021, compared with the corresponding month of the previous year, increased by 6.8% (with an increase of prices of goods and services by 6,8% each). As related to the previous month consumer prices increased by 1.1% (of which goods by 1.3% and services by 0.3%), Statistics Poland said in its flash estimate released on Monday. This is a level unseen since May 2001, when inflation in Poland spiked up to 6.9%.

German FM: Poland deserves our solidarity in tackling migrants crisis

The European Union is far from being at the end of its "sanctions spiral" against Belarus, German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas said on Monday. Europe accuses Belarus of mounting "a hybrid attack" by flying in migrants and pushing them to cross illegally into Poland. Belarus has repeatedly denied the accusation. Maas also said that Poland was not responsible for the migrant crisis at the border with Belarus, and that it deserved EU's solidarity in that situation. U.N. Security Council condemns Belarus for migrant crisis. Russia denies involvement

Russia traded barbs with Western members of the U.N. Security Council on Thursday over a crisis on the border between Belarus and Poland, with Russia's deputy U.N. envoy suggesting his European colleagues have "masochist inclinations." The EU Commission said on Friday that Turkey's flights to Minsk would be reduced to zero for some time after a deal with Turkish Airlines to stop the flow of Middle Eastern migrants to Belarus.

EU parliament condemns Poland's near-full ban on abortions

The European Parliament adopted a resolution on Thursday, condemning Poland's near-total ban on abortion. "A year after the Polish Constitutional Tribunal’s ruling, MEPs are calling on the government to lift the ban on abortion that puts women’s lives at risk," the institution said in a press release.

Defence ministry: warning shots fired as group of migrants stormed border

The Ministry of National Defence informed that yesterday a group of migrant tried to force their way through the border in the area near Białowieża. The ministry added that the migrants had tried to destroy the fence and cast various objects at the soldiers, who fired warning shots. The Polish Border Guard said it had recorded 468 illegal attempts of border crossing on Wednesday alone.

European Commission head Ursula von der Leyen said on Wednesday that the European Union would widen its sanctions against Belarus, targeting both people and entities. She added the situation on the border between Belarus and Poland was not a migrant crisis, but an attempt by the "authoritarian regime" of Minsk to destabilize its neighbours.

Russia blamed the European Union on Wednesday for the migrant crisis on the border between Belarus and Poland, accusing it of trying to "strangle" Belarus with plans to close part of the frontier and urging it to talk directly with Minsk. German Chancellor Angela Merkel told Russian President Vladimir Putin by phone that Belarus's "instrumentalisation of migrants" was inhumane and unacceptable and asked him to press Belarus's government on the matter, her spokesperson said on Wednesday.

Morawiecki: safety of our borders is under brutal attack

"For the first time in 30 years, we see the safety and integrity of our borders being so brutally attacked and tested," Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said at a special session of the Sejm devoted to the migrant crisis at the Polish-Belarusian border. He added the country was dealing with a "staged spectacle". The head of the government also stressed that migrants were being used "as human shields to destablise the situation in Poland, Lithuania and the whole EU".
