Three falcon fledglings from Palace of Culture named and ringed

A pair of falcons from downtown Warsaw - Franek and Giga - have recently extended their family by three lovely fledglings. The little falcons - Aria, Iga and Varso - were born at the end of April. They hatched in a family nest located above the viewing terrace at the Palace of Culture and Science, the iconic communist-era skyscraper. The chicks have just been ringed and were very happy to be photographed during this simple procedure.

Series of tragic accidents in the Tatra Mountains

Two people died and four were injured in a series of accidents which happened on Wednesday in the Tatra Mountains. An 11-year-old child was among the injured persons, said a duty rescuer from Tatra Volunteer Search and Rescue (TOPR).

Von der Leyen: EU Commission won't approve Polish recovery plan unless all requirements are met

The European Commission will not approve any recovery plan unless it is certain that all criteria have been met - EU executive chief Ursula von der Leyen wrote in her response to a letter from a number of European Parliament groups, which had reacted to rumours regarding a potential agreement between the Commission and the Polish government on the National Recovery Plan. Von der Leyen listed three concrete requirements that Poland would have to meet in order for such an agreement to be reached.

Flash estimate: Poland's GDP grew 8.5% in Q1 compared to 2021

Polish economy grew by 8.5% in the first quarter of 2022 year on year, according to a flash estimate released on Tuesday by Statistics Poland. For comparison, Poland's gross domestic product in Q4 of 2021 increased by 7.3% in relation to the corresponding period in 2020.

Defender Europe 2022 drills continue in Drawsko Pomorskie

Firing practice with the use of the multiple integrated laser engagement system (MILES) and combat vehicle attack scenarios were on the list of Tuesday tasks of the Defender Europe 2022 NATO drills held in Drawsko Pomorskie. The practice is scheduled to be held until May 27.

4-year-old Auschwitz victim's personal data found in a children's shoe

Curators at the Auschwitz-Birkenau Museum have discovered personal data of a 4-year-old Věra Vohryzková, a Czech Jewish girl who in 1943 was sent to the concentration camp along with her mother and younger brother. The information was found written inside one of the children's shoes, which are part of the museum collection. This is yet another such find. In 2020, Amos Steinberg's shoe and a suitcase that belonged to his father, Ludvik, were identified.

Community officer saves a dog from a burning apartment

A community officer from Sosnowiec (Silesian Voivodeship) saw smoke coming out one of the apartments in a residential block. When he climbed onto a neighbouring balcony, he heard a sound like moaning or whining. After he got inside he looked into a crib, but luckily it was empty. What he did find was a dog suffocating with smoke. The brave officer saved the distressed animal and shortly after the firefighters extinguished the flames.

EU Commission forecast: war in Ukraine to curb Poland's GDP growth

"Poland’s economic growth is expected to be impacted by Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine. Higher uncertainty, trade disruptions, strong inflationary pressures and monetary policy tightening are set to curb GDP growth, which is expected to decelerate to 3.7% in 2022 and 3.0% in 2023," the EU executive said in the Spring 2022 European Economic Forecast.

PGNiG and Sempra Infrastructure pave way for future LNG deliveries to Poland

PGNiG has signed Heads of Agreement with Sempra Infrastructure defining the main provisions of a purchase and sale agreement for 3 million tons of liquefied natural gas (LNG) per annum, the PGNiG Group informed in a statement on Monday (May 16). The LNG would be sourced from two liquefaction terminals in the Gulf of Mexico and would come to Poland and other countries via a floating regasification terminal in the Gulf of Gdańsk.

President Duda in Estonia: Russia doesn't and will not rule the world

President Andrzej Duda visited Tallinn on Friday (May 13). At a joint press conference with his Estonian counterpart Alar Karis, Duda said that both countries were lucky to have plenty of solutions at hand which "tell Russia loud and clear that it doesn't rule the world, and shall not rule the world". Simultaneously, Poland's Defence Minister Mariusz Błaszczak visited Vilnius, where he met with Lithuanian Defence Minister Arvydas Anusauskas.

Statistics Poland: inflation in April at 12.4% compared to 2021

Inflation in Poland in April 2022 was at 12.4% compared to the corresponding month in 2021 - Poland's official statistical agency Statistics Poland said in a report released on Friday. This is 0.1 percentage point more than the agency estimated at the end of April. Compared to the March 2022, consumer prices in Poland increased by 2.0%.

Police escort father with his suffocating 5-year-old son to a hospital

A desperate father of a 5-year-old boy ran to police officers who were in the middle of an intervention and asked them for help as his son was suffocating. Realising that the situation was very serious, sergeant Radosław Kotwicki ordered a police escort and the race for the boy's life began. Luckily, it ended happily.

Lloyd Austin: if Russia attacks Poland, NATO will respond as a coalition

If Russia decides to attack Poland or any NATO member state, the Alliance will respond as a coalition, U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin assured on Wednesday during a session of House Appropriations Committee. He added that the United States were prepared to such scenarios and would be ready to respond.
