Maria has fled war in Ukraine together with her mother and daughter. Being forced to leave their home, they took all their life savings with them. They have found shelter in Gdańsk, but unfortunately someone broke into their apartment and robbed them. "We felt safe here, but when we went for a walk, someone broke in," Maria said.
The women escaped from Vinnytsia in early March. They took their life savings with them - money, family heirloom and jewellery. The three refugees have found shelter in Gdańsk district of Wrzeszcz. Unfortunately, around 8 p.m. on Wednesday (March 30), their flat was robbed.
"Fleeing Ukraine, we took our money with us to be able to make a living without having to ask for help. It was our only source of livelihood," Maria said. "We felt safe here, but when we went for a walk, someone broke in. We hope that this money will be recovered, otherwise we will be forced to return to our home in Ukraine," she added.
The women said that among other things the thiefs had taken was 10,000 dollars in cash.
Police are looking for suspects
The case is being investigated by the police under the supervision from Gdańsk prosecutors.
"The officers received a call regarding breaking and entering, and burglary, in Wrzeszcz district. The victims are Ukrainian women. They estimated their loss at tens of thousands zlotys," said Mariusz Chrzanowski from Gdańsk Metropolitan Police.
Crime unit officers have secured traces and CCTV footage at the scene, and questioned witnesses. Anyone who may have any information about this burglary or the perpetrators is kindly asked to contact the police.
