A few hundred people gathered on Friday at Warsaw's Castle Square, mainly Ukrainian women and children. They staged a protest against the Russian aggression against their country. Similar gatherings took place in other European cities that day.
Ukrainian women protesting at the Castle Square in Warsaw brought national flags and banners with them. A group of protesters gathered around the Sigismund's Column and chanted anti-war slogans.
A tvnwarszawa.pl reporter Mateusz Szmelter was at the event. "Before 1 p.m., the protesting women and children started to march around the Castle Square. They are chanting slogans in Ukrainian and English, such as "stop killing children". At the front of the protest, the participants are holding a banner saying 'Putin kills'" - Szmelter said.
The protest ended about 1:30 p.m.
The initiative group of Ukrainian mothers in Warsaw announced in a press release that similar manifestations would take place in other European capital cities. Their aim is to "draw the world's attention to horrifying tragedies of children in Ukraine, caused by the Russian aggression".
Within 21 days of war in Ukraine (as of March 16), at least 108 children were killed in shelling carried out by Russian Armed Forces, and more than 100 were wounded. Over 1 million children were forced to evacuate from Ukraine. According to UNICEF, one Ukrainian child becomes a refugee every second.
