The Internal Security Agency (ABW) has arrested a man suspected of spying against Poland. According to the spokesperson for Poland's special services coordinator, Stanisław Żaryn, the man is believed to have spied for Belarus.
"The ABW has arrested a man suspected of spying against Poland. The evidence collected in this case suggests the detained man worked for Belarusian intelligence. That's what he's been charged with at the prosecutor's office," said the spokesperson for Poland's special services coordinator, Stanisław Żaryn.
He added that, based on the gathered evidence, the court decided to place the man under arrest for three months.
Żaryn also said the investigation was launched into the arrested man's alleged work for foreign intelligence service and against Poland.
"The detained person for many years was associated with various uniformed services. In 1981, this man joined the ZOMO (Motorized Reserves of the Citizens' Militia), he was an officer of the militia. Then, until 1999, he served in the police, and left the uniformed services 20 years ago as Border Guard lieutenant. In the last 20 years he hasn't been associated with any state institution," he explained.
"The man has been arrested. This will help us to carry on with the investigation, a complicated one, as they usually are when it comes to spying. The ABW will keep on trying to determine all details of this man's work for Belarusian services," he said.
Żaryn informed that the investigation was launched. "We do not rule out further arrests. This inquiry will certainly require taking further steps," he added.
