Emil C., a Polish soldier who has recently defected to Belarus, was sentenced on Wednesday to six months community service for mentally and physically abusing his mother. He was also served a one-year restraining order and told to stop excessive drinking. The soldier also has an arrest warrant issued after him, and is facing 10 years in prison for defection.
A district court in Olsztyn on Wednesday upheld a regional court ruling issued against Emil C. in September. The defendant had appealed against the first instance ruling.
The soldier was found guilty of physically and mentally abusing of his mother.
He was sentenced to six months community service and received a one-year restraining order, forcing him to stay at least 50 metres away from his mother and stop excessive drinking.
An arrest warrant was issued after Emil C. on Monday for defecting for Belarus. The soldier is facing up to 10 years in prison.
Defence Minister Mariusz Błaszczak dismissed the soldier's superiors for his defection.
