European Commission spokesperson Veerle Nuyts commented on Tuesday on Polish president's ratification of the amended bill on the Supreme Court, which is to dismantle the contested Disciplinary Chamber of said court. "We take note of the fact that the draft has been signed into law by the president of Poland. In the context of the Polish Recovery and Resilience Plan we will be carefully assessing the law against the milestones," Nuyts said.
Poland's President Andrzej Duda on Monday evening signed an amended bill on the Supreme Court into law. The main goal of the legislation is dismantling the unlawfully appointed Disciplinary Chamber for judges and replacing it with a Chamber of Professional Responsibility.
The bill had been approved by the parliament last Thursday (June 9), but the lower house rejected the majority of crucial changes proposed by the upper house, including nullification of all verdicts passed by the Disciplinary Chamber since its foundation.
The European Commission demanded Poland introduce changes to the law on the Supreme Court, saying that if the country acts otherwise, it would not receive money from the recovery fund.
EC spokesperson: Polish government committed to reform the disciplinary regime
European Commission spokesperson Veerle Nuyts commented on the issue at a press briefing on Tuesday. "We take note of the fact that the draft has been signed into law by the president of Poland. In the context of the Polish Recovery and Resilience Plan we will be carefully assessing the law against the milestones in which the Polish government committed to reform the disciplinary regime, including replacing the Disciplinary Chamber by an independent and impartial tribunal established by law," Nuyts said
She reiterated that said commitments must be fulfilled before Poland can receive any payments as part of the recovery fund.
