A dispatch officer of Gliwice Police on Thursday received a call from a woman driving her 10-year-old son for a heart transplant. She said they needed to get to the hospital as soon as possible, but got stuck in a traffic jam on the A4 highway.
In order to ensure the 10-year-old gets safely to the hospital, the dispatch officer launched a coordinated operation. First he sent a patrol from Sośnica station over to the woman's location, then he called a toll gate operator in Kleszczów and said there was a need to use the emergency lane.
A coordinated operation
When a patrol car arrived at the toll gate, the dispatcher also informed officers from Zabrze, who were ready to escort a vehicle through on their turf. They waited for the woman close to Maciejów.
The distressed mother of the boy exited the highway, and once she passed the toll gates she was met by the patrol car from Gliwice which escorted her to Zabrze, where the local car took over the escort.
Doctors awaited the boy's arrival
The 10-year-old and his mom were quickly and safely escorted to the hospital where the staff awaited his arrival.
There are situations in road traffic in which drivers or passengers may unexpectedly find themselves at risk of life or health loss. Police officers on road duty often face responsibility to make quick decisions on which human life and health may depend. During escort missions they are also responsible for the driver and passengers of the escorted vehicle. In order for the mission to end successfully, each second is of utmost importance. Let's always remember about it whenever we see a police car on blue lights.
