Two police officers from Kwidzyn helped a young homeless man who had stolen groceries from a shop. The officers who were called to the scene did not stay indifferent to the shoplifter's predicament and took him to a local addiction center. A few days later, the two policemen received a letter of gratitude from the parents of the 20-year man.
The incident took place on March 16 in Poland's northern town of Kwidzyn. The police were called to a shop from which a homeless man had stolen some food products.
"The officers were moved by the homeless man's situation. They told the 20-year-old about shelters for homeless persons and support institutions providing care to those in need," said Kwidzyn County Police spokesperson Anna Filar.
She added that the officers had taken the man to the addiction center in Opaleń, where he received the help he required.
A few days after the intervention, Sergeant Damian Borowski and Constable Szymon Talar got a very nice surprise from the young man's parents. The officers received a letter of gratitude.
"On behalf of myself and my husband, I would like to pass my sincerest thanks to Officers Borowski and Talar for showing heart as well as for their - in our opinion - professional, empathetic, compassionate, pedagogical, humane, psychological approach to the incident that occurred on March 16, 2023, involving our son," the parents of the 20-year-old man wrote.
Kwidzyn police spokesperson also stressed that these words of recognition, gratitude, and appreciation were the highest form of acknowledgment of the work police officers do and situations they encounter every day while providing help to others.
