A 31-year-old man has been charged with offending religious feelings and damaging public property in an act of hooliganism, after he cut down a wooden roadside cross in Zielona Góra, Lubusz Police spokesperson Marcin Maludy informed on Wednesday.
"As a result of presented charges, the man is facing up to five years in prison. The maximum sentence in this case would be related to the charge related to property damage," Marcin Maludy said.
The cut-down cross at Spawaczy Street, in Zastalowskie neighbourhood, was spotted by local residents on Monday afternoon. They immediately notified the local parish and notified the police, who began to search for the perpetrator.
It turned out the perpetrator had posted a video online showing himself cutting down the cross. He was detained on Tuesday evening in his rented apartment in Zielona Góra.
The spokesperson added that the 31-year-old had been also inciting others to join an action of cutting down roadside crosses.
