A court of appeals has decided that former minister Sławomir Nowak must return to custody, unless he pays bail of 1 million zlotys to the Warsaw District Prosecutor's Office. He has until June 19 to do it.
Nowak - a former minister of transport and former chief of Ukrainian road agency - has been charged with corruption, including taking bribes in exchange for granting contracts on building and repairing roads in Ukraine, as well as money laundering.
On April 12, after 9 months behind bars, he was released from custody by the Warsaw District Court. He has been placed under police supervision, banned from leaving Poland with his passport confiscated, and ordered to pay a 1-million-zloty bail. The prosecution appealed against that decision.
Nowak had until April 26 to pay the bail, but his defence had asked the court to suspend the execution of the order until the legally binding ruling has been made. Nowak and his attorney Joanna Broniszewska had also filed a complaint against the bail decision.
The court of appeals decided on Wednesday that Nowak must return to custody and remain there until he has paid the 1-million-zloty bail to the account of the Warsaw District Prosecutor's Office.
The court has given Nowak until June 19 to pay the required sum. The decision is not yet legally binding.
The prosecution, however, insist Nowak should remain in custody for the duration of the trial.
