"By the end of the year, Poland will resign from LPG imports from Russia," Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki announced on Thursday. He added that Poland had the most radical plan for weaning off Russian hydrocarbons.
"By the end of the year we are quitting Russian LPG, we are preparing infrastructure and (other) import sources, so as to end imports from Russia," Morawiecki said at a press conference on Thursday after being asked why the Sejm had rejected a Senate amendment introducing ban on LPG imports from Russia.
"Poland has prepared the most radical plan for quitting Russian hydrocarbons: oil, gas and coal," the prime minister said.
Poland's lower house of parliament, the Sejm, rejected the upper house's amendment to the act on "extraordinary solutions aimed to counteract supporting aggression against Ukraine and serve national security". The law introduces ban on import and transit of Russian coal and coke through Poland. The Senate had proposed to add ban on Russian LPG imports, but the lower house rejected the proposed amendment in Wednesday's vote.
According to the Polish LPG Association, in 2020 the total consumption of LPG in Poland amounted to 2,34 million tonnes, 2 million tonnes were imported, whereas domestic production was at 0.53 million tonnes, and exports at 0.2 million tonnes. 65% of imports came from Russia - approx. 1.3 million tonnes, which was more than a half of domestic consumption. 3% of LPG imports in 2020 came from Belarus.
The Polish LPG Association is the authoritative voice of LPG market in Poland. Established in Warsaw, 1996. POGP is a member of WLPGA. Since February 2020, liquefied natural gas (LNG) is also the subject of POGP analytical activity.
