Longest road tunnel in Poland opens in south WarsawTVN24
"Right here, today we are opening the most advanced and at the same time the longest tunnel in Poland, it's over 2 kilometres long," Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said on Monday during Warsaw's southern ring road opening ceremony. Shortly after 12, first cars entered the tunnel heading towards Wawer district.
The opening ceremony with Prime Minister Morawiecki began at 11:30 a.m. in Wilanów. First cars entered the tunnel at 12:15 and headed towards Wawer, as only this part of the tunnel has been opened so far, tvnwarszawa.pl reporter Artur Węgrzynowicz informed.
The prime minister said the tunnel, which connects two highways and two expressway networks, would also symbolically connect eastern and western Poland. "It's very important because until today Poland was to a large extent cut up with this network of expressways - very important network - but not connected in very many places" - Morawiecki said.
The prime minister added that the tunnel would spur economic growth and increase life comfort and safety for many residents of Warsaw and Masovian province.
The new tunnel is 2,335 metres long and is the last part of the southern part of Warsaw's Express Ring Road. Drivers will now have three lanes in both directions at their disposal.
