Dariusz Martynowicz, a teacher of Polish at Małopolska Szkoła Gościnności (Lesser Poland's School of Hospitality) in Myślenice has been named Teacher of the Year for 2021. He won a competition whose aim is to award teachers particularly valued by students, parents, and local communities.
Thirteen teachers of various subjects from across the country were nominated for the 2021 Teacher of the Year award.
The award ceremony took place on Tuesday at the Royal Castle in Warsaw, on the eve of the National Education Day held each year on October 14.
The jury, led by the chairman of the Committee of Pedagogical Sciences of the Polish Academy of Sciences Professor Stefan M. Kwiatkowski, also awarded two distinctions: to Joanna Świercz, a math teacher at the UNICEF Primary School No. 31 in Opole, and to Jaonna Waszkowska, a teacher of Polish and media knowledge at the Emilia Plater II General Secondary School with Bilangual Classes in Sosnowiec.
The award committee, composed of all former winners of the Teacher of the Year title, also awarded an honorary title of Friend of School to Anja Rubik. The title of Educational Initiative of the Year was granted to the Empowering Children Foundation.
During the ceremony, a title of Teacher of Tomorrow (Nauczyciel Jutr@) was awarded to Joanna Mikusek-Przystajko, an ethics teacher and a pedagogue at the Community School and Preschool Complex in Kudowa Zdrój.
The Teacher of the Year title has been awarded since 2002 by "Głos Nauczycielski". The candidates are put forward by: teachers, students, parents, local authorities and community organisations. Last year's edition was cancelled due the coronavirus pandemic.
The 2019 Teacher of the Year title went ot Zyta Czechowska, a teacher and special pedagogue at the Special School Complex in Kowanówko (Greater Poland).
