Poland and Germany have come to the agreement that the German Patriot air defence system will be stationed in Poland, a defence ministry spokesperson said on Wednesday, after Warsaw had initially suggested sending the systems on to Ukraine. On Tuesday evening, Poland's Defense Minister Mariusz Błaszczak said on Twitter that Poland was preparing to deploy the German Patriot air defense system on its territory.
Germany last month offered Poland the Patriot system to help secure its airspace after a stray missile crashed and killed two people in Poland. Polish Defence Minister later asked Germany to send the fire units to Ukraine instead.
"After talking to the German Defense Ministry, I was disappointed to hear the decision to reject supporting Ukraine," Błaszczak tweeted on Tuesday evening. "Deploying the Patriots to the western Ukraine would increase the safety of Poles and Ukrainians."
"We proceed to work on arrangements to place the launchers in Poland, implementing them into our command system," he added.
A German Defence Ministry spokesperson confirmed on Wednesday that Warsaw and Berlin have come to the agreement that the German Patriot air defence system will be stationed in Poland.
