Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki told the media that he expects a clear declaration from the Chairman of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker and his Deputy Frans Timmermans regarding the rule of law dispute. He underlined that "he has kept his word" after talks with the EC representatives.
Morawiecki came to Brussels on Thursday for the EU summit devoted, among other things to migration problems in the EU.
Before the summit, Polish PM was asked by journalists on what he was going to tell other countries if they inquire about the future of Polish Supreme Court law.
"A move by the other side"
"We discuss this issue with other prime ministers. Today, if I'm asked, I will demostrate how much we've achieved in the scope of changes that were discussed with both Chairman and Deputy (of the European Commission). They know very well that some provisions that were negotiated were handled exactly as agreed," said Morawiecki.
That is why, he emphasised, he is now waiting for a "move by the other side".
"Will for compromise"
"I'm glad to see the presentation by minister Konrad Szymański and ambassador Andrzej Sadoś at the General Affairs Council has been positively welcomed by many countries. I believe that more and more countries begin to realise that such profound interference in issues lying exclusively within the competencies of member states, as well as undermining the credibility of one of key member states, are not steps taken in the right direction," said Polish prime minister.
He added that Poland clearly displays a will for compromise. "However, at the same time, I must stress that we will continue reforming Polish judiciary because it requires fundamental changes," he said.
"I'm happy to see that there are more and more positive responses from all over Europe," added Morawiecki.
"I have kept my word"
Polish prime minister was also asked about recent comments by Frans Timmermans who demands changes to the Polish Act on the Supreme Court.
"I have kept my word. Even more, as with regards to extraordinary complaint we've decided to limit the number of institutions that hold the right to submit it. Morover, we've limited its use in international issues. We've made great effort to reach a compromise with the EU. We want to reach an agreement. I'm waiting for positive moves, positive decisions on the European Commission's part," said Morawiecki.
He underlined that a "positive narration by Juncker and Timmermans would certainly help a lot". "I expect such declarations from them," he said.
Deputy Chairman of the EC Frans Timmermans said on Thursday in the Europarliament that he's aware that an urgent action is needed with regards to Polish Supreme Court judges who are to retire after 3 July.
According to the Act on the Supreme Court, the Court's judges who reached retirement age and didn't apply for tenure extension shall retire. The European Commission opposes this regulation and claims that the Supreme Court judges are irremovable.
