Fighter jets from six countries, including Poland, were scrambled in response to Russian aircraft close to NATO air space, the Air Command of the Alliance informed on social media. Some of the incidents took place above the Baltic Sea.
NATO Air Command said on social media on Friday that its Quick Response Alert jets were scrambled a number of times in recent days.
Allied fighters from Poland, Denmark, France and Spain in the Baltic Sea region and Romania and the United Kingdom in the Black Sea region have scrambled multiple times over the past four days in response to Russian aircraft near Alliance airspace," NATO Air Command said in a tweet.
"Allies deployed from the north to the south of Europe remain unified in support of the NATO Air Policing mission," said Maj. Gen. Jorg Lebert, the chief of staff for the Allied Air Command.
"The quick response of NATO's two CAOCs demonstrates NATO forces' readiness and capability to guard Allied skies 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year," he added.
In 2021, NATO fighter jets scrambled 370 times - mainly to intercept unreported flights near the Allied air space. Approximately 80% of all missions were launched in response to Russian military planes.
