A herd of cows of French Limousin breed happen to be roaming through forests in Mircze Forest District (Lublin Voivodeship). The cattle has escaped from a local farm, whose manager has been already issued a fine. So far, the cows on the run have seemed very reluctant to let go of their freedom.

Forest guards from Mircze Forest District received a call that a herd of cows had spotted in Telatyn forest. After a few days of observation, this report was confirmed.

"To our surprise, five cows are living at the edge of the forest area. The animals feed off local fields and found a peaceful resting spot under the forest stand," said Jerzy Mączka, a forester from Mircze Forest District.

Provisional corral with bait unsuccessful

The foresters have also come across a mysterious corral set up without their knowledge in the are managed by the State Forests.

"It turned out that people responsible for the missing cows have unlawfully set up a provisional corral with bait, meant to help in capturing the missing animals. Construction of the structure has caused damage to a nearby forest plantation," Mączka added.

Already 30 people have tried to catch the cows

The forest guards have determined that the animals on the run come from a local cattle farm breeding French Limousin cows which is one of the most popular beef cattle breeds in the world.

The Regional Directorate of the State Forests in Lublin (RDLP) wrote at its website that "rough climate and rocky ground of France's central region, being home to this breed, has contributed to the development of such characteristic features as health, stamina, and adaptation capabilities".

The cows are still at large. A number of attempts have been made to catch them but all proved unsuccessful, even though some 30 people were involved.

Fine for the manager and further attempts to catch the cows

According to Marek Dziaduszyński from RDLP in Lublin, the cattle escaped as a result of insufficient supervision over the animals.

"The forest guards, with the help of the police, have managed to determine who was responsible for the missing cows. That person has been issued a fine," he said, adding that further joint efforts were being made to capture the herd.
