Ziobro: CJEU ruling highlights historic mistake by PM Morawiecki

The CJEU ruling is evidence of a very serious political, historic mistake made by Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki - Poland's Justice Minister Zbigniew Ziobro said at a press conference on Wednesday (Feb.16). In his view, the ruling made by EU's top court, which rejected Polish and Hungarian challenge to rule of law conditionality mechanism, allows for unlawful limitation of freedom of EU member states. Morawiecki later replied to Ziobro by saying he understood the minister's "agitation", adding that he hoped the ruling would not affect the unity of the ruling coalition.

Trzaskowski in Kiev: if anything happens, Warsaw is ready to help

Mayors of Warsaw and Prague, Rafał Trzaskowski and Zdenek Hrib, went to Kiev to meet with the city's mayor Vitali Klitschko. "They are showing their solidarity with Ukraine, with the Ukrainian nation. They are declaring support on our road to the European family," Klitschko said after the meeting. "We are here also to show our readiness to help. If anything happens, both Warsaw and Prague are ready to provide this help," Trzaskowski said.

Rau after meeting with Lavrov: Europe's security is in danger. Diplomacy is the only way out

Polish and Russian foreign ministers, Zbigniew Rau and Sergei Lavrov, met in Moscow on Tuesday (Feb.15). "Europe's security is in deep crisis. Situation around Ukraine remains very tense and there is still risk of it escalating," the Polish minister said. The talks were on issues pertaining Polish chairmanship of the OSCE. "We would like to create an informal platform for open political discussion between OSCE nations, which would allow for the discussion of mechanisms for stopping crises like the present one," minister Rau added. Lavrov said after the meeting that Russia would continue its dialogue with the West on security issues.

Poland's esteemed journalist, writer, and diplomat Daniel Passent passed away on Monday at the age of 84. The information about his death was first released by "Polityka" weekly, with which Passent has been collaborating throughout his whole career since 1959.

Board of education chief outraged with parliamentary inspection "as a daughter of a Home Army soldier"

Two inspections took place in Lesser Poland Board of Education on Monday. One was related to the pandemic and the question of remote learning, while the other to the recently passed new law on education, known as lex Czarnek. The first control was carried out by MPs from the Left party, whereas the other by Civic Platform deputies. Between the inspections, the head of the education board Barbara Nowak held her own press conference, at which she said that empty boxes she had prepared for the inspectors were to symbolise thousands of emails sent by parents. She added that she had not printed them out in order to protect the environment.

United States to send further 3,000 troops to Poland

The United States will be sending 3,000 additional troops to Poland in the coming days to try and help reassure NATO allies, four U.S. officials told Reuters on Friday, as Russia held military exercises in Belarus and the Black Sea following the buildup of its forces near Ukraine.

Duda after call with Biden: no declaration to send any military forces to Ukraine

President Andrzej Duda said after Friday's call with U.S. President Joe Biden, leaders of the EU and NATO, and of a few countries, that "there is an absolute unity among Western leaders, there's a deep need for solidarity". He added that no declarations were made regarding sending any military forces to Ukraine, but there was readiness to support Ukraine financially and through arms deliveries, especially defensive means.

The head of Polish diplomacy Zbigniew Rau on Friday met with Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskiy. After the talks, Rau said they discussed, among other things, the "deteriorating security situation around Ukraine", Poland's OSCE chairmanship, and the Normandy Format. Ukrainian head of state said on Twitter after the meeting with the Polish minister that the two discussed "the peace process and the security situation".

Government plans to introduce tickets to national parks

The government has put forward a draft legislation on national parks, which would introduce entrance fees for visitors. The authorities make no bones that the change is addressed mainly to the residents of Kraków, Poznań, and Warsaw, who currently enjoy national parks located in a walking distance from their homes.

British troops and U.S. F-15 fighter jets arrive in Poland

American F-15 jets landed at a Polish air base on Thursday, Warsaw's defence minister said, as NATO beefs up the military presence on its eastern flank amid tensions over a standoff between Ukraine and Russia. Earlier that day British troops landed in Warsaw as part of the push from NATO members.

The leaders of Germany, France and Poland will discuss ways to de-escalate tensions over the Russian military build-up on the border of Ukraine in their talks late on Tuesday, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said. Poland's President Andrzej Duda said that finding a solution to avoid war was necessary. "I believe we can achieve this," he added. France's President Emmanuel Macron said that "peace and stability of the European continent are treasured by us and we believe our duty is to do whatever is in our power to preserve it".
