Civic Coalition requests a committee be launched to investigate state action over wiretap scandal

Civic Coalition parliamentary club filed a request on Friday (October 21) a committee be launched to investigate state authorities' action taken with regards to the so-called wiretap scandal of 2014. The committee would look into the period between July 1, 2013, and October 20, 2022. Commenting on the motion filed by the opposition, Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said he was in favour of lauching a committee or other mechanisms "to verify the ways that Russian influence was affecting the area of security and energy system".

Andriy Negrych: people liberated from Russian occupation tell us lots of terrible stories

Andriy Negrych, director of GEM (Global Empowerment Mission) Ukraine - which provides help to people who lived under Russian occupation - told TVN24 BiS about the organisation's mission. "Some of the towns, cities, and villages were under occupation for more than six months. They lived in fear of being killed, being rape. Unfortunately, many of them were," he said. Asked if such people want Ukraine to keep up the fight, he replied briefly: "Till the end, of course".

Eurostat: September inflation in EU at 10.9%. Poland above the average

Inflation in Poland in September this year was at 15.7% year on year, according to a report released by Eurostat. This is one of the highest spikes in consumer prices in the European Union. The highest inflation in the bloc last month was recorded in Estonia and Lithuania, and the lowest in France and Malta.

Co-creator of Poland's legendary cartoons Józef Ćwiertnia passed away at 85

Animator, visual artist, director and screenwriter - Józef Ćwietnia - passed away at the age of 85. He was a co-creator of Poland's legendary cartoon characters: piebald terrier Reksio, and brothers Bolek and Lolek. The Animated Film Studio in Bielsko-Biała - for which the artist had worked for many years - informed about his death on social media. "Our heart's been broken today," the studio wrote.

Court: Border Guard violated international law by pushing Iraqi migrants back

The Voivodeship Administrative Court in Białystok passed a ruling in September in the case of Iraqi migrants, who had been pushed back the Belarusian border by Polish Border Guard officers. The court said at the time the pushback had been a violation of the law. Now, Poland's Commissioner for Human Rights (RPO) has published the justification of the ruling, according to which the Border Guard could not have override the international and EU laws with a national ordinance.

Polish Bayraktar for Ukraine has a name and is ready to be delivered

"Our Bayraktar for Ukraine has been manufactured. It's wrapped and ready for delivery," Polish activist and journalist Sławomir Sierakowski wrote in a Facebook post on Monday (October 17). Sierakowski is the initiator of a crowdfunding campaign to purchase a Bayraktar drone for the Ukrainian Army. He also said the drone would be named "Marik". "That's what the Ukrainians call Mariupol, to which they intend to return once it's been recaptured," he explained.

Core inflation in September at 10.7%, says central bank

The National Bank of Poland (NBP) announced on Monday (October 17) that - in September 2022 - inflation net of food and energy prices amounted to 10.7% year on year. To compare, in August this year, the core inflation was at 9.9%. The NBP added the period under analysis, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) had stood at 17.2% year on year.

President Andrzej Duda and Defence Minister Mariusz Błaszczak on Friday (October 14) attended the tests of the first U.S.-produced Patriot battery for Polish Armed Forces. At a press conference held in Toruń, president Duda said that the Patriot system was going to be a part of the Wisła multi-level, interoperational air and missile defence system. He added the effort was meant to upgrade Poland's air defences in view of the threats connected with the Russia-Ukraine war.

Government agrees on energy and coal price caps

Local governments, smaller businesses, and public use entities - such as schools, hospitals or churches - will pay a maximum of 785 zlotys per megawatt hour (MWh) - Poland's Climate and Environment Minister Anna Moskwa said at a press briefing on Friday (October 14). Earlier that day, the government adopted a draft bill on the issue. Furthermore, the project assumes maximum electricity prices for households which exceed the 2,000 kWh limit at 693 zlotys per MWh. Deputy PM Jacek Sasin said on Twitter the government also agreed on a bill on distribution of coal by local governments.

Remains of approx. 30 POWs discovered in former Stalag II-D Stargard camp

Researchers from Pomeranian Medical University in Szczecin discovered the remains of approximately 30 prisoners of war who had been buried in the area of the former Nazi German Stalag II-D Stargard prisoner-of-war camp. According to the scientists, the burial ground found this time are "completely different" from that which they had unearthed in the previous stage of the research. The identity of the deceased persons remains unknown.

Eight complete skeletons unearthed in Tarnów

A local archeologist in Poland's southeastern city of Tarnów discovered eight complete human skeletons at an earthworks site operated by Tarnów Waterworks. The remains - found by Eligiusz Dworaczyński - come from a former cemetery which had once been located next to the former Bernardine Monastery.

Marek Kuchciński enters government and takes over as PM's office chief

President Andrzej Duda on Wednesday (October 12) appointed former speaker of parliament and current deputy chief of the ruling PiS party Marek Kuchciński as Minister - Member of the Council of Ministers. The president thanked Kuchciński - who will take over as chief of prime minister's office - for stepping up "in these difficult times, when just like the rest of Europe and rest of the world, we are struggling with a whole range of economic problems, mostly caused by the Russian invasion into Ukraine, when there's so much unrest".

Polish ambassador in Kyiv: Ukrainian people expect the state to continue the fight

Poland's Ambassador to Ukraine, Bartosz Cichocki, told TVN24 on Wednesday (October 12) that the Ukrainian people expect the state authorities "to continue the fight" against the Russians. "Ukrainians have lost too many relatives, too many Ukrainian people have lost their homes to back down now. They have nowhere to back down to, you can sense a very patriotic mood in the air," he added.
