Organizers of June 4 march in Warsaw say 500,000 people took part

The June 4 march "against soaring prices, thievery and lies, in support of free elections and democratic, European Poland" went through the streets of Warsaw and other cities on Sunday. The event, organized by Civic Platform leader Donald Tusk, marked the 34th anniversary of Poland's first partially-democratic elections after WWII. According to the organizers, approx. 500,000 people took part in the demonstration.

"When I look at the center of Warsaw today and see the unending crowd of people who came to manifest their anger, but also their hope, I realize I long haven't thought the words "this is Poland" match this time and place so well," Civic Platform chairman and former prime minister Donald Tusk said before the June 4 march of opposition supporters.

Ukraine was high on the agenda in talks between Canada's Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Poland's Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki in Toronto on Friday (June 2). "Poland and Poles, and by governments, we are deeply involved in supporting Ukraine," Morawiecki said at a press conference after the talks. "At the top of our agenda was the Kremlin's brutal and unjustifiable invasion of Ukraine, which has redrawn the security landscape of Europe after decades of peace and prosperity," Trudeau stressed at the briefing.

"The cosmos is so large, so far, there are almost infinite possibilities that there’s another Earth where life has developed, and who knows – maybe it’s civilized," Administrator of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Bill Nelson told TVN24 BiS on Friday (June 2) during his official visit to Poland. "I’m so happy to be here in Poland, one of our international partners through the European Space Agency. And I think it’s a great future that Poland has in space," the NASA chief added.

Morawiecki: Poland will help Ukraine train F-16 pilots

Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki, a staunch ally of Ukraine, said on Thursday (June 1) his country would help Ukraine train F-16 fighter pilots but that Warsaw had too few Patriot batteries to supply any to Kyiv.

President Andrzej Duda said on Thursday (June 1) he would send the contested "Lex Tusk" to the Constitutional Tribunal before the commission the bill assumes to launch has started its work. The new law, that is meant to create a commission to investigate Russian influence on Poland's internal securuty, has been criticised by the United States, the European Union, and Polish opposition members.

During plenary session, the European Parliament held a debate regarding the recently adopted Polish law that would allow the creation of a commission that would look into Russian interference in Poland's security between 2007 and 2022. "We are dealing with a threat to the foundations of the European Union." said Juan Fernando Lopez Aguilar of Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats. Tineke Strik (Group of the Greens/European Free Alliance) argued that "the Polish ruling party is on a war path against democracy, to win the elections at all costs".

Poland and Lithuania to seek increased defence of NATO's eastern flank at Vilnius summit

Lithuania and Poland will seek increased defences for NATO's eastern flank at the alliance's forthcoming summit in Vilnius, Lithuania's defence minister said on Tuesday (May 30), saying there were deficiencies there. "For the first time in our history, NATO will provide full air defence during the Vilnius Summit," said Arvydas Anusauskas, Minister of Defense of Lithuania. His Polish counterpart Mariusz Błaszczak stressed the two countries were "unanimous when it comes to opposing Putin's attempts to rebuild the Russian empire".

The European Commission expressed concerns on Tuesday (May 30) about a new Polish law which could effectively ban individuals from public office with no possibility of appeal to an independent court. Justice commissioner Didier Reynders said it was "impossible to agree on such a system without a real access to justice", and that the Commission would take measures if necessary.

Polish MFA replies to U.S. State Department's concerns regarding "Lex Tusk"

"Poland appreciates our allies' opinions and remarks regarding our national legislation. Underlining strongly that this legislation remains within sovereign national competence of the Polish parliament, we are always ready to clarify and explain all potential misinterpretations and doubts about it," Poland's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on Tuesday (May 30), in response to a statement released by U.S. Department of State regarding Poland's new legislation known as "Lex Tusk". "Poland highly values the alliance with United States and remains ready to engage in further dialogue through diplomatic channels," the ministry added.

U.S. Ambassador on "Lex Tusk": we are well aware of the concerns expressed by many regarding this law

"The United States government shares concerns about laws that could appear to allow to the pre-empting of voters ability to vote on the candidates of their choice, outside of a clearly defined process in independent courts," U.S. Ambassador to Poland Mark Brzezinski told TVN24 on Monday (May 29). He was referring to the so-called "Lex Tusk", a controversial bill that would allow to investigate Russian influence in Poland. "We fully appreciate and understand why president Duda has forwarded this bill to the Constitutional Tribunal," the ambassador added.
