Regional court in Lublin on Thursday sentenced Karolina S. and Arkadiusz S. for one year in prison each. The married couple stood trial for bringing home-made explosive materials to the Equality March in Lublin last year, endangering life and health of many people.

I treat the independence of the Supreme Audit Office (NIK) as priority and I shall protect it with all legal measures at my disposal - the head of NIK Marian Banaś said on Thursday. The day before, the Central Anti-Corruption Bureau (CBA) entered the seat of NIK and searched flats owned by Banaś. He said the bureau's actions had been "unlawful" and stressed he expected an "immediate meeting with the Speaker of the Sejm Elżbieta Witek". The chief of the Sejm Information Centre Andrzej Grzegrzółka said the Speaker has invited Banaś and the NIK board for a meeting scheduled on Friday at 11:30 am.

New proposals regarding the EU budget are better than those presented earlier on - Poland's Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said on Thursday. He also announced ahead of the summit in Brussels that Poland would not support cuts in the EU budget, nor revolution in its structure.

Vice President of the European Commission Vera Jourova reiterated on Wednesday in the EU Parliament the executive would not hesitate to launch EU law infringement procedure with regard to to the latest amended law on Polish courts, as long as the ongoing legal analyses would justify taking such measures.

Polish prosecutors have examined three rulings by a Belgian court regarding custody over 10-year-old Ibrahim. The analysis of the documents showed the boy's father should neither be held accountable for parental abduction of the child, nor for abduction attempt last year.

At the request of the Regional Prosecutor's Office in Białystok, former PiS MP and former CBA agent Tomasz Kaczmarek (Agent Tomek) was detained on Wednesday. The investigators presented him with additional charges regarding investigation into the activities of the Helper association. Furthermore, the bureau asked the court to place Kaczmarek under arrest.

The Central Anti-Corruption Bureau (CBA) has entered to flats belonging to the President of the Supreme Audit Office (NIK) Marian Banaś - Onet.pl portal reported. The spokesman for the Regional Prosecutor's Office in Białystok told TVN24 that the proceedings were being conducted in connection to the investigation into Banaś' asset declarations. Chief press officer of NIK Zbigniew Matwiej informed the CBA agents also came to the NIK headquarters, but conducted no search, as "NIK chief said they had insufficient constitutional grounds".

Belgian authorities informed that 10-year-old Ibrahim was safe and sound. The boy is under the care of his father, and any further steps would be taken only by a court. The Child Alert procedure has been therefore called off - Polish police informed on Tuesday.

I'm sure a compromise will be hammered out - the head of PM's Chancellery Michał Dworczyk said on Tuesday in TVN24. He referred to the talks between the board of the Polish Mining Group (PGG), the government and the unions. The miners demanded, among other things, a 12-percent pay rise. Meanwhile, the miners staged another protest on Tuesday, this time in Sławków - Poland's rail hub in Silesia where Russian is being delivered.

Members of coal miner unions on Monday left small heaps of coal at the Silesian offices of Law and Justice (PiS) MPs. "We came to protest against the government policy, against importing so many tonnes of coal, and not only from Russia. Against the policy of eliminating coal from public life" - said the chief of coal miner "Solidarity" union Bogusław Hutek. The unionists stressed they demanded "urgent government action".

Polish police are looking for a missing 10-year-old boy named Ibrahim. According to the authorities, the child was abducted by his father, citizen of Morocco, on Sunday evening in Gdynia. The Child Alert procedure was launched Monday early morning.

The Sejm adopted on Friday a draft budget for 2020. The bill assumes revenue and spending to be balanced at 435.3 billion zlotys. In the third reading, the Sejm made minor adjustments to the bill. If case the bill eventually becomes law, it would be the first balanced budget in Poland's history.

On the 9th of March the Grand Chamber of the Court of Justice of the European Union will hear the parties over the request for temporary suspension of Poland's Supreme Court Disciplinary Chamber, filed by the EU Commission - the CJEU informed on Friday.

On Friday afternoon the Sejm published on its website the lists of candidates for the new National Council of the Judiciary (KRS) and the names of judges who had supported them in the process of appointment. The Sejm Information Centre added that the verdict of the Voivodeship Administrative Court (WSA) has "removed a legal obstacle" that prevented the lower house from publishing the lists.

Polish lower house on Thursday rejected the no confidence motion against the Minister of the Interior and Administration submitted by the opposition. Minister Mariusz Kamiński, who also serves as special services coordinator, has been strongly criticised by Civic Coalition for "damaging" and "spreading pathology" in the services under his command. The no confidence motion was announced after January's "Superwizjer" TVN report, in which former anti-corruption bureau agent Tomasz Kaczmarek (better known as "Agent Tomek") had accused Kamiński of pressuring him during operation regarding a residence allegedly owned by former president Aleksander Kwaśniewski and his wife. Before surviving the vote, Kamiński delivered a long speech laying out the achievements of the services under his leadership.

The Sejm on Thursday disregarded the Senate's call to reject the amendment to the broadcasting act and the license fees act which assumes nearly 2 billion zlotys of compensation in 2020 for Polish Television (TVP) and Polish Radio. The bill will now be sent to the president in order to be signed into law. The debate on the bill culminated after Law and Justice (PiS) MP Joanna Lichocka extended her middle finger at the opposition. She later explained that the gesture wasn't what most people thought it was.

Major European cities are asking the European Union for direct access to funds in the bloc's next long-term budget to help the EU reach its goal of becoming neutral in terms of carbon dioxide emissions by 2050, a letter showed on Wednesday.

In a letter sent today to the CJEU, the government said the EU Commission's request for interim measures was unacceptable - informed the government spokesman Piotr Müller. The said measures would lead to suspending of one of Poland's constitutional bodies - the Supreme Court - he added.

The EU Commission still wants to be engaged in an open dialogue with Poland, but at the same it remains the guardian of the EU treaties - the EU executive deputy chief Vera Jourova said during a debate on Polish rule of law in Strasbourg. The motion to add the debate to the agenda was filed by the Renew Europe faction in reaction to the adoption of the so-called muzzle law in Poland.

The Supreme Administrative Court (NSA) has rejected a complaint over refusal to register foreign birth certificate having two women mentioned as parents. Based on this case, the NSA had adopted a resolution in December 2019 stating it was impossible to have a woman registered as father in the Polish document.

An investigation has been launched into Monday's tragic accident in Polish ski resort in Bukowina Tatrzańska. Strong wind tore a roof off a ski rental building and blew it straight at a family of four. As a result, mother and her two daughters died, and the father was taken to a hospital in a state of shock. County construction supervision authority informed on Tuesday the building had been erected without permit and done in a rough and ready fashion.

On Wednesday (February 5th) afternoon, a resolution by the Sejm Speaker Elżbieta Witek scheduling presidential election on May 10 was published in the Journal of Laws. Thereby, the presidential campaign was officially commenced. According to polls, the incumbent president Andrzej Duda, backed by his former party - the ruling Law and Justice (PiS), stands the best chance to win and be re-elected. His opponents, however, claim that in politics one can never be sure of anything, and pledge to fight to win over the hearts of voters.

Poland's overhaul of its judiciary constitutes "destruction" not reform, EU Values and Transparency Commissioner Vera Jourova said in an interview for Der Spiegel published on Saturday, amid growing concern that Poland's nationalists are seeking to muzzle judges.

One miner died on Friday after a tremor hit state-owned Rudna mine in Polkowice (Lower Silesian Voivodeship). Four other miners were injured in the quake.
