UNCHR and IOM "shocked and dismayed" with deaths of migrants

The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNCHR) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) have called for an immediate access to migrants at the Polish-Belarusian border, in order to provide them with medical assistance, food, water and shelter. The organisations stressed that "asylum-seekers and migrants should never be used by States to achieve political ends".

Man charged with stealing figurines leaves detention and steals another one

A 51-year-old resident of Lublin was released from police detention on Saturday evening. Earlier on he has been charged with stealing two sculptures - a dwarf and a lizard - from the Old Town in Zamość (Lublin province). The latter stood on a window sill next to another lizard figurine. The first one didn't even return to its place, when the other went missing. It was found on Sunday on the 51-year-old.

Highest spike in COVID infections since May

The Ministry of Health informed on Wednesday about 882 new coronavirus cases and the death of 20 COVID patients. Since the start of the pandemic, Poland has reported 2,899,888 infections and 75,523 COVID-related deaths.

Court orders police to return confiscated flag with "Women's Strike" logo

"The court ordered the flag be returned immediately. The judge explained that the for the purposes of the inquiry, which is to determine whether the "Women's Strike" logo desecrated the flag, the police could have made a photographic documentation," says attorney Bartosz Obrębski, who filed a complaint at the court on last year's police intervention in Warsaw.

Pneumatic guns instead of candies, crossbow instead of cereals

Chamber of Fiscal Administration officers from the Masovian branch have detected and secured pneumatic and gas weapons, a crossbow, parts of an automatic gun, and hundreds of rounds. The arsenal has been found in boxes declared as sweets, cornflakes and flippers, sent over from North America.

PM on migrants at the border: operation orchestrated in Minsk and Moscow

"We are certain that people from Belarusian territory are being driven to Belarus Border Guard stations, where they receive instructions, and then they are transported further towards border with Poland," Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said at a press conference on Monday. "We're dealing with an operation orchestrated in Minsk and Moscow," he added. Three people who had illegally crossed Polish-Belarusian border were found dead due to hypothermia and exhaustion.

Health ministry: 363 COVID infection cases, no deaths reported

The Ministry of Health informed on Monday about 363 newly confirmed coronavirus infection cases. No COVID-related deaths were reported in the last 24 hours. Since the start of the pandemic in Poland, 2,898,299 infection cases and 75,488 deaths have been reported so far.

Legendary trade union chairman Alfred Miodowicz dies aged 92

The first chairman of OPZZ (All-Poland Alliance of Trade Unions) and a member of parliament in late communist era Alfred Miodowicz has died - the OPZZ informed on Friday. Miodowicz faced Lech Wałęsa in a TV debate in 1988, and took part in the Polish Round Table Talks. He was 92.

Sejm Research Bureau: house speaker did not ask for opinion regarding vote repetition

The Bureau of Research of the Sejm informed on Friday that, during August 11 session of the lower house, it had not received a request from Sejm Speaker Elżbieta Witek for legal analysis of vote repetition. The bureau added that "oral consultations are not subject of registration". The statement was issued in response to MP Tomasz Zimoch's request. Earlier on, Speaker Witek had said that "a discussion and oral consultation" had taken place in her office.

Supreme Administrative Court: Westerplatte returns to Gdańsk

Part of the Westerplatte territory, including the Monument to the Defenders of the Coast, returns under Gdańsk administration, said the city mayor spokesman. The decision was made by the Supreme Administrative Court (NSA). In 2019, the plot was taken over by the state with a special act. After the legislation came into force, construction of an external exhibition has been launched. Since then the city hasn't been allowed to organise WWII outbreak anniversary commemorations.

Police are looking for suspect behind killing 21 bee families

The police are looking for persons who poisoned bees in Tworzymirki (Wielkopolskie province). Someone killed 21 bee families there, which according to local police translate into approximately 420,000 insects. Some of the beehives were sealed with expanding foam.

74-year-old businessman's desperate attempt to stop robbers

He left the bank and got robbed. But a 74-year-old man wasn't going to give up easily. He threw himself on the hood of the robbers' getaway car. Finally, the perps threw the stolen backpack out of the car, but kept a bag with documents and money. They didn't know, however, that most of the cash was in the backpack. The police are looking for the suspects and appeal to anyone who might help in finding them.

MP Grzegorz Braun to health minister: you will hang

After his speech in the lower house, a far-right Confederation MP Grzegorz Braun directly addressed Poland's Minister of Health Adam Niedzielski and said: "You will hang". Deputy house speaker Małgorzata Kidawa-Błońska called his words "a huge scandal". "I disagree with the minister over many issues, he said many foolish things. But I will defend you against such comments. This was a criminal threat, a truly awful thing," said Polish People's Party leader Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz. Shortly after, minister Niedzielski himself took the floor. "I wouldn't like us to limit ourselves to just condemning, and not drawing consequences. Either we're assertive, or chiming in," he said.

August inflation highest in over two decades

Prices of consumer goods and services in Poland in August 2021 increased by 5.5% in a year-to-year comparison, and 0.3% compared to July - Poland's Central Statistical Office (GUS) announced on Wednesday. This means that inflation spiked to a level unseen in Poland for over 20 years.

Road hog nicknamed "Frog" still on the loose despite sentence

Poland's notorious road hog Robert N., nicknamed "Frog", known for his reckless racing through the streets of Warsaw, has been sentenced for 18 months in prison. He was supposed to report to serve his sentence in January, but he hasn't done so yet. The police also haven't taken him to jail so far.

Grandson of a victim preserves memory of a tragic bus accident

"You only live as long as you are remembered," says the inscription on a stone plaque which has been placed at a bridge in Nowe Miasto nad Wartą a few weeks ago. In 1969, a bus crashed through the barriers and fell off the bridge. Eleven people lost their lives. No much was known about this tragedy. An inquiry by a grandson of one of the victims has changed it all.
