Statistics Poland: retail sales increase much lower than expected

Retail sales at constant prices in October 2022 increased by 0.7% compared to the corresponding month of the previous year, and by 0.3% compared to September 2022, Poland's Central Statistical Office (Statistics Poland) said on Wednesday. Retail sales at current prices increased by 18.3% year on year.

Woman charged for living in a tent with a 2-year-old daughter

A 24-year-old woman has been charged for living with her 2-year-old daughter in a tent in Gdańsk. The girl has been taken to a hospital due to severe upper airway infection. According to the Gdańsk District Prosecutor's Office, the woman claims she has been taking good care of her child. She is facing 5 years in prison. The prosecutors requested the woman be temporarily detained. Her daughter will be placed in a foster home.

Economic slowdown, high inflation and interest rates. OECD forecast for Poland

In the latest "Economic Outlook" report, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) forecasts that Polish gross domestic product in 2023 will increase by 0.9%, while inflation will be at 10.8%. Ukrainian experts allowed to inspect missile blast site in Poland

Ukrainian experts were granted access on Friday (November 18) to the deadly missile blast site in the Polish village of Przewodów. They were escorted to the scene by the police. "I am grateful to the Polish side for granting them access. We will continue our cooperation in an open and constructive manner, as closest friends do," Ukraine's Minister of Foreign Affairs Dmytro Kuleba said in a tweet.

President Andrzej Duda visited the village of Przewodów on Thursday (November 17), where a stray missile had killed two men on Tuesday. At a press briefing he said that no one wanted to do any harm to Poland, and that he spoke with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy. "This is an extremely difficult situation for them, emotions run high and there's also huge stress," Duda said, adding that "in recent days, Ukraine has been under a mass missile attack carried out by Russia".

Consumer prices in October of 2022 increased by 17.9% compared to the corresponding month of the previous year - Poland Central Statistical Office said on Tuesday (November 15). The last time when prices spiked higher was in December, 1996, and stood at 18.5%. Compared to September 2022, inflation in October increased by 1.8% - Statistics Poland added.

Rau: a number of countries would trade their armed forces with those of Ukraine

Poland's Minister of Foreign Affairs Zbigniew Rau said after the meeting of EU foreign minister in Brussels that the bloc's training mission Ukrainian soldiers would be based in Poland and Germany, as well as in any other country ready to take this responsibility upon itself. "A number of countries, including some bigger ones, would trade their armed forces with those of Ukraine," Rau added.
