European Union leaders on Friday backed a plan to tackle fake news on the internet and the bloc's chief executive rounded on one of the EU chiefs, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, as one of the main culprits in spreading disinformation.

Poland marked the 37th anniversary of martial law introduction

Thirty seven years ago on Sunday the 13th of December 1981 martial law was declared in Poland. At 6 a.m. a radio announcement by General Wojciech Jaruzelski informed Poles about the implementation of the decree by the Polish Council of State. Martial law would be binding in the entire territory of Poland. The communist authorities, on the 12th of December, began arresting activists from the oppostion and the Solidarity movement. In just a few days, 49 internment centres were filled with about 5,000 people. Curfew was sat from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. and enforced by the militia. People were required to have special permission to travel beyond their area of residence. School and university classes were cancelled and restrictions were implemented severely restricting civil libertiesof Poland's citizens. For example, all correspondence was subject to official censorship. Some of the most important institutions and places of work were placed under military control in which 8,000 military commissars were in control. On the 31st of December 1982, the martial law was suspended and on the 22nd of July, 1983 was it was cancelled. The United States and other Western countries protested against the repressive measures taken in Poland, but some of them lingered for years to come.

About 100 members of NGOs and civic groups gathered in the main hall of the Spodek arena on Friday where the UN climate talks are entering their final stretch and demanded action from ministers who continued to work around the clock after a draft agreement was produced overnight.

Poland gets Colossal Fossil Award at U.N. climate talks

The Climate Action Network (CAN), a worldwide network of over 1300 NGOs combating climate change, on Thursday voted to give COP24 host Poland the Colossal Fossil of the Year Award, which is given to the country deemed to have done its best to block progress in the negotiations or in the implementation of the Paris Agreement.

Is SKOK Wołomin credit union scandal the biggest financial affair of Poland?

In the scandal involving former chiefs of Financial Supervision Authority, we're dealing with a criminal inaction, said the head of the Council of Ministers' Standing Committee Jacek Sasin. Law and Justice MP referred to the case of SKOK Wołomin credit union and, in his opinion, this affair is even bigger than the Amber Gold scandal. "The losses suffered by the people in the SKOK Wołomin scandal amount to some 1,5 billion zlotys," said Sasin. He also added that "all of these things were happening due to complete inaction of the financial regulator (KNF) which for over 18 months watched what was going on and did not react".

Deputy PM Szydło testified in court over car crash involving her motorcade

Beata Szydło spent 45 minutes in a court in Kraków on Monday, after she was summoned as a witness. She was questioned in regard to the accident involving the government motorcade on the 10th of February 2017. This was the second time she was called to testify, however she did not show up for the first hearing. Her testimony was kept confidential.

Teachers' unions demand minister of education's resignation

We demand the Minister of Education Anna Zalewska's dismissal. We will be demanding it even stronger if she fails to take any steps to address our discontent, said Ryszard Proksa, the chairman of the National Section of Education "Solidarity". On Monday, in many Polish cities, including Warsaw, Gdańsk, Łódź, Kielce and Białystok, press conferences took place organised by teachers' unions which members demand minister Zalewska's resignation. In a joint statement they presented "seven cardinal sins" of the minister. According to the unionists, she is responsible for the lack of decent raises for teachers, making the path to promotion longer, introducing new regulations for assessment of teachers, they find unfavourable, as well as maintaining a fake dialogue with the unions.

"Superwizjer" TVN journalists have won the Grand Press 2018 award

Journalists Bertold Kittel, Anna Sobolewska i Piotr Wacowski ("Superwizjer" TVN24, TVN), as well as Grzegorz Głuszak ("Superwizjer" TVN24, TVN) were among the laureates of the Grand Press 2018 award. The 22nd Grand Press final gala was taking place in the Museum of the History of Polish Jews POLIN in Warsaw. The jury has selected the best journalistic works of the year. In this year's edition, 693 works have been submitted. Fifty three of them have reached the final.
