President Duda signs court reforms bill into law

President Andrzej Duda has signed the bill amending the Law on Common Courts and the Law on the Supreme Court - president's spokesperson Błażej Spychalski informed on Tuesday. The controversial changes have been widely contested both in Poland and across Europe, with many institutions, such as the Venice Commission and the EU Commission, calling upon Poland not to adopt the legislation.

Macron: France to support Poland's transition away from coal

French President Emmanuel Macron said on Monday in Warsaw at a joint conference with Poland's Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki that his country would support Poland's transition away from coal through use of nuclear technology to produce electricity. He stressed that Poland's energy mix is a result of history and a certain legacy. President Macron also reassured that Poland would benefit from the Just Transition Fund in order to carry out its own energy transition.

Macron "concerned" with judiciary reforms. French president visits Warsaw

This event is of great importance to us, but above all I sincerely hope it would mark a breakthrough in Polish-French relations - President Andrzej Duda said on Monday at a joint conference with French President Emmanuel Macron. The French head of state came to Warsaw for a two-day visit. "Our countries are closer than one might think" - he said at the conference.

Poland and U.S. seal purchase of 32 F-35A jet fighters

Polish Air Force will now have at its disposal 32 F-35 stealth multirole combat aircraft. American made state-of-the-art machines are the fifth generation of jet fighters. The contract worth 4.6 billion dollars was signed on Friday in Dęblin Air Base. One of such machines, belonging to Italian Air Force, was put on display in the base.

Poll: Law and Justice party and justice system reforms

Half of those asked expressed negative opinion regarding the ruling Law and Justice (PiS) party's action on the justice system - according to the survey by "Fakty" TVN and TVN24. Nearly 30 percent described these actions as "definitely bad".

Presidential survey by Kantar for "Fakty" TVN and TVN24

44 percent of respondents declared that in this year's presidential election they would vote for the current president Andrzej Duda, who is running for re-election. Civic Platform's candidate Małgorzata Kidawa-Błońska would secure the second result with 24 percent - according to a survey conducted by Kantar for "Fakty" TVN and TVN24. If there would be a run-off between the two abovementioned candidates, 54 percent of those asked would cast their vote on the current president, whereas 42 percent on Kidawa-Błońska. According to the poll, 4 percent were uncertain who they would choose.

Poll: Law and Justice support drops, opposition slightly ups

Since December 2019 voter support for the ruling coalition of Law and Justice, United Poland and Agreement has fallen from 41 percent to 35, according to the latest poll by Kantar for "Fakty" TVN and TVN24. Support for Civic Coalition has gone up from 27 percent to 30. The remaining parties haven't seen significant changes in voter support.

Foreign minister commends Trump's Middle East peace plan

"I commend the efforts of President Donald Trumps’s administration aimed at resolution of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. I took note of the unveiling of the political part of the peace plan. Together with its economic component it constitutes a valuable basis for an in-depth discussion between two parties of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict" - Poland's Minister of Foreign Affairs Jacek Czaputowicz wrote in a statement on Wednesday.

Constitutional Court suspends Supreme Court resolution

Until the competence dispute between the lower house and the Supreme Court has been settled, application of the Supreme Court's resolution from January 23rd is suspended starting from the date of its adoption - Poland's Constitutional Court (TK) has decided.

CoE takes Poland's judiciary and rule of law under scrutiny

The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) decided in a vote on Tuesday to open a monitoring procedure for Poland to assess its democratic institutions and condition of the the rule of law. Authors of the adopted resolution argue that recent reforms "severely damage the independence of the judiciary and the rule of law".

Jourova: we hope for a "new chapter" in rule of law debate with Poland

"We are ready for dialogue. We cannot make compromises on the basic principles, and the rule of law is one of the basic principles. However, it is quite obvious that we need to work together on better defining what is the basic principles of the rule of law, what are the main parameters of independent judiciary, and what the member-states are expected to do to keep their position as reliable, trustworthy partners in the European judicial sphere" - EU Commission deputy chief Vera Jourova said at a press conference on Tuesday, after meeting with Poland's Justice Minister Zbigniew Ziobro.

Justice minister: Poland ready for compromise regarding selection of judges

Poland is willing to consider a compromise with the European Union on its selection of judges under certain conditions, its justice minister said on Tuesday after talks with a senior EU official on rule of law concerns ."I declared readiness to convince my colleagues from the ruling camp to consider coming up with a new model for choosing judges," Zbigniew Ziobro told journalists after meeting EU Values and Transparency Commissioner Vera Jourova in Warsaw.

"Do not be indifferent in the face of historical lies. Do not be indifferent when you see the past being exploited for the needs of contemporary politics. Do not be indifferent when any minority suffers discrimination. For it's the essence of democracy that the majority wields the power, but at the same time, the rights of the minority must be respected," former prisoner of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration and death camp, Marian Turski, said on Monday during the commemoration of the 75th anniversary of the camp's liberation. He stressed that indifference may cause "an Auschwitz suddenly fall down on you from the skies". Mr Turski also urged younger generations not to "be indifferent when any government violates the already established social contracts".

The presidents of Poland and Ukraine called on Monday (January 27) for greater global efforts to combat anti-Semitism, racism and xenophobia as the world marked 75 years since the liberation of the Auschwitz death camp amid concerns over a resurgence of anti-Jewish prejudice.
