Prince William and Kate Middleton from the United Kingdom will visit Warsaw and Gdańsk. Their visit will not be political; it is meant to be a gesture of friendship and a tribute to the common history. They will come with their children and will stay at the Belweder Palace.
Beautiful, young and adored – they refresh and give a touch of modernity to the British monarchy. From Monday the couple will have a series of meetings with Poles.
Secretary of State in the Chancellery of the President of the Republic of Poland Krzysztof Łapiński assures that the visit is not of political nature. “There will be no political speeches. It is more a way of stressing the good relationships between the two countries,” says the president’s spokesman.
The visit of Prince William, who is second in the line of succession to the British throne, and his spouse is nevertheless important. It will begin past noon with breakfast at the Presidential Palace, followed by a walk along Krakowskie Przedmieście Royal Avenue, which will offer the public a chance to meet the couple.
William and Kate will also meet with combatants at the Warsaw Rising Museum and with young entrepreneurs. In the evening, Łazienki Królewskie will be the venue of a reception held to celebrate the 91st birthday of Queen Elisabeth II.
Tuesday in Gdańsk
On Tuesday the couple will visit a former German Nazi concentration camp Stutthof and then will take a walk along Długi Targ in Gdańsk. Time is also allowed for seeing how amber is processed and for a Polish meal.
For Prince William it might be a special experience to visit the Gdańsk Shakespeare Theatre, which was established thanks to the support of his father, Prince Charles.
In the European Solidarity Centre, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will not only see the exhibition, but will also meet the former president Lech Wałęsa. “We had this meeting planned a long time ago. Everything is ready to receive their visit appropriately,” says former president Lech Wałęsa and adds that he “knows what he is going to say.”
The first visit
William and Kate are coming to Poland for the first time. For their children this will also be the first visit to a country which was not part of the British Empire.
For more than two days the family will stay at the Belweder Palace, which was specially prepared to house the distinguished guests. In particular for the couple’s children. “There is an outdoor playground in Belweder gardens. But if the weather is not good or if the children get bored playing outdoor, there is also a special room with toys,” says Łapiński.
Almost 4-year-old George and 2-year-old Charlotte will play in the care of their nanny, as they will not accompany their parents during the official events of the couple’s visit.
