Poland to report a record budget deficit in 2023

The deficit of the central and local government sector in 2023 is to reach 192 billion zlotys – according to a fiscal notification sent to Brussels by the Polish government. In nominal terms, this is a record figure. However, compared to the country’s GDP, there have been periods when the situation was worse. Here’s how it has looked recently.

President Duda: new parliament to convene on Nov. 13, two major candidates for PM

Mateusz Morawiecki and Donald Tusk are the candidates for the prime minister of a new cabinet - Poland's President Andrzej Duda said at a press conference on Thursday (Oct.26). Duda summed up the two-day consultation with leaders of parties that have won parliamentary seats in the recent election. The president also announced the new parliament will convene on Nov.13.

New Left after talks with president: opposition agrees on two fundamental issues

Representatives of New Left met with President Andrzej Duda on Wednesday (Oct. 25) to discuss the creation of a new government after the recent parliamentary election. "I think the president is growingly convinced that the opposition are cooperating with each other and that they are united over two fundamental declarations," one of the leaders of the left-wing alliance, Włodzimierz Czarzasty said after the meeting at the Presidential Palace.

Third Way: we are optimistic that there will be no obstruction from the president

Leader of the Third Way coalition, Szymon Hołownia and Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, met with Poland's President Andrzej Duda on Wednesday (Oct. 25). "The president has made it clear he would convene the first session of the Sejm, most likely, the very last minute," Hołownia said after the meeting. He added the president did not want to shorten the current term of the lower house. Kosiniak-Kamysz said Duda had not yet made any decisions regarding tapping a new prime minister.

Polish president Andrzej Duda held consultations on Tuesday with Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki of the still-ruling PiS party, and Donald Tusk, the leader of the largest liberal opposition grouping Civic Coalition. The head of president's office Grażyna Ignaczak-Bandych said on social media that both meetings "went on in good atmosphere". "The president congratulated Law and Justice on winning the election and Civic Coalition on the good election result," she added.

President to hold two-day consultations with party leaders

During Tuesday's consultations with the president, PiS will be represented by a party of three: Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki, Deputy Speaker of the Sejm Ryszard Terlecki, and the party spokesman Rafał Bochenek - government spokesperson Piotr Muller told TVN24 on Monday (Oct. 23). Empty docket in Constitutional Tribunal. Billions in EU recovery funds still on hold

The docket sheet at the website of Poland's Constitutional Tribunal is empty. Not a single case has been listed for hearing. One of the possible reasons behind this situation is a serious conflict within the court over the term of its president, Julia Przyłębska. This, in turn, precludes the full court panel to convene and look into an amendment to the law on the Supreme Court which, according to the ruling party, could unblock billions of euro in EU recovery funds earmarked for Poland.

President Duda to invite party leaders next week to discuss new government

Poland's President Andrzej Duda will meet parliamentary party leaders next week, his office said, as the nation waits to see whom he will task with forming a government after the ruling nationalists lost their majority in a general election. Man pretends to be a mannequin and robs shopping mall

A 22-year-old man pretended to be a mannequin standing on display at a shopping mall in Warsaw. Once the establishment had been closed, he stole jewellery from one of the stores. On another day, also after closing time, he enjoyed a square meal at a restaurant and then slid under a gate into a clothes store. After he replaced his attire with a set of brand new garments, the man felt hungry again and returned to the restaurant for another free meal.

Eurostat: only one EU state with inflation in double digits

Inflation in the European Union in September 2023 dropped to 4.9% year on year against 5.9% in August - according to the latest data released by Eurostat on Wednsday (Oct. 18). The Netherlands is currently experiencing deflation. Hungary, on the other hand, has recorded the highest inflation in the whole bloc. Moreover, this is the only EU state with inflation level in double digits.

White House congratulates Poland on record turnout in parliamentary election

The United States looks forward to working with Poland's next government after Sunday's election, White House National Security Council spokesperson Adrienne Watson said in a post on X on Tuesday (Oct. 17). Election results from Poland showed the ruling nationalists losing their parliamentary majority to a liberal pro-EU party and its allies. The previous day, U.S. Ambassador to Poland Mark Brzezinski had said the record voter turnout "is a strong manifestation of the importance the Polish people attach to freedom and democracy".

Presidential aide: we still need to wait for parliamentary majority to form and it might take a while

The president has time for that - President Andrzej Duda's aide Paweł Szrot asked when the head of state would start political consultations aimed at appointing a new government. Szrot added that candidate for prime minister is put forward by parliamentary majority, "but we still need to wait this majority". Donald Tusk: democratic parties are ready to take over responsibility for Poland

Final election results announced. Democratic opposition wins 248 seats in the Sejm

The National Electoral Commission (PKW) has published the final results of the 2023 parliamentary election. We now know how the distribution of seats in the Sejm will look like. According to tvn24.pl calculation based on the PKW data, the democratic opposition groupings have won a combined majority of 248 seats, with the absolute majority at 231.
