Original, elegant decor preserved in a villa from 1920s

Original, pre-war period doors, floors, wardrobes, and even fireplaces have survived until today in very good condition. Warsaw historic preservation officer has unveiled the beauty of the interior of a 1920s villa, located right next to the Royal Łazienki park. Attempts have been made to list the building in the Registry of Cultural Property.

77th anniversary of Auschwitz concentration camp liberation

On January 27, 1945, Red Army soldiers opened the gates of German Auschwitz concentration camp. Some 7,000 extremely weak and seriously ill prisoners, including 500 children, welcomed the Soviet soldiers as liberators. In less than five years of the camp's functioning at least 1.1 million people were killed there.

37-year-old woman pregnant with twins dies. Family blames hospital

Agnieszka, a 37-year-old woman pregnant with twins, was admitted to the Voivodeship Hospital in Częstochowa, where the first of her sons died on December 23. "We decided to wait as there was a chance to save the other baby," the hospital explained in a statement. The pregnancy was terminated only on December 31, despite the death of the second foetus had been pronounced earlier. The woman died on January 25 at another hospital. She was survived by three children.

Health ministry: new daily record in coronavirus infections

The Ministry of Health informed on Wednesday about a record 53,420 coronavirus infections reported in the last 24 hours, as well as 276 COVID-related deaths. Since the start of the pandemic Poland has reported a total of 4,637,776 infections and 104,373 deaths.

Sejm committee votes in favour of lifting NIK chief's immunity

The Sejm Rules and Deputies' Affairs Committee has recommended Supreme Audit Office (NIK) President Marian Banaś's immunity be lifted. The head of the committee Kazimierz Smoliński (PiS) informed that 9 deputies were in favour of the motion, and 7 were against.

Remote classes for part of school students from Thursday on

Education Minister Przemysław Czarnek announced on Tuesday that starting Thursday (Jan. 27) until the end of winter holidays 5th-graders and older children will switch to remote classes. He added that an ordinance in that regard would be signed on Wednesday.

Maks was on his way home after football practice on a frosty Saturday, when he saw a woman sitting at a bus stop in Jaworze (Silesian Voivodeship). He noticed her soaked shoes and that she kept her head down. He remembered that in such cases one has to shake a person and speak to them loud and clear. "A woman with a dog walked past the bus stop. Maks asked her if she knew the woman at the bus stop. She only said with a snap that the woman was probably drunk. I'm glad he didn't follow her example," said the director of Maks's primary school.

National Security Bureau: no question of Polish troops being sent to Ukraine

Poland's President Andrzej Duda and the country's high government officials on Monday discussed the situation in Ukraine. The meeting was held at the National Security Bureau (BBN), whose chief Paweł Soloch later said the question of military support for Ukraine was discussed. He added, however, no decisions were made in that regard. "There is no question of our army being present on the territory of Ukraine," he stressed.

Auschwitz Jewish Center listed as institution "highly detrimental" to children

Auschwitz Jewish Center has been placed on a list of over 200 "highly detrimental" institutions, according to Parents Protect Children Association (Stowarzyszenie Rodzice Chronią Dzieci). Lesser Poland board of education head Barbara Nowak has passed this list to the members of parliament as an answer to a question about which organisation are violating parents' rights. "The said list is an attempt at defamation, slander, and intimidation," said the director of the Auschwitz Jewish Center, Tomasz Kuncewicz.

Health ministry: 29,100 COVID cases on Monday

The Ministry of Health informed on Monday about 29,100 newly confirmed cases of coronavirus infection, as well as two COVID-related deaths. Since the start of the pandemic Poland has reported a total of 5,547,315 infections and 103,846 deaths.

Lech Wałęsa, the former Polish president and Solidarity trade union leader who played a leading role in the fall of Communism, has the coronavirus, he said on Friday.

Employers and trade unions jointly call for mandatory vaccinations

Trade unions representatives and employers united under the Social Dialogue Council (RDS) issued a joint call to the government demanding introduction of mandatory COVID-19 vaccinations. They also demanded that "preferential treatment of vaccinated people" be introduced. The call was signed by 9 organisations, including NSZZ "Solidarność", OPZZ, Employers of Poland, Business Centre Club, and Confederation Lewiatan.

In a ceremony at the White House on Wednesday, U.S. Vice-President Kamala Harris officially appointed Mark Brzezinski new U.S. Ambassador to Poland. In an interview for "Fakty" TVN correspondent Marcin Wrona, Brzezinski revealed when he was coming to Poland, who was going with him, and what were his plans with regards to his new position. He also shared some of his memories from the time when he had lived in Poland for two years during a scholarship programme.
