EU Commission to deduct fines for Turów mine from funding for Poland

The European Commission informed Polish government that the EU executive will proceed to executing fines imposed on Poland over Turów mine dispute with the Czech Republic, TVN24 correspondent in Brussels Maciej Sokołowski reported on Tuesday. The sum for the first month of unpaid penalties, in the amount of 15 million eurios, is to be deducted from EU funds for Poland in 10 days.

President Duda: NATO's presence in the eastern flank should be increased

President Andrzej Duda said after meeting with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg on Monday that, in his opinion, "NATO's presence in the eastern flank should be increased along the whole eastern flank starting from the north, all the way down to the south". Stoltenberg stated that the readiness of the NATO Response Force had already been increased and that NATO is considering the deployment of additional battlegroups to the south-eastern part of the Alliance.

Court overrules decision banning construction of Stobnica castle

Construction of controversial Stobnica castle on an artificial island in the Notecka Forest can now be resumed. The Voivodeship Administrative Court in Warsaw has overruled last year's decision by Poland's Chief Construction Supervision Inspector (GINB) who cancelled the construction permit. Until a final ruling has been passed, the construction of the castle can continue, said GINB spokesperson Joanna Niedźwiedzka.

Last farewell to distinguished actress Barbara Krafftówna

Funeral service for Barbara Krafftówna were held on Friday at Warsaw's Church of St. Andrew the Apostle and St. Brother Albert. The actress was buried in the Avenue for the Distinguished at Powązki Cemetery. "She was an artist of a huge and versatile talent, reinforced by great diligence and passion," President Andrzej Duda wrote in a letter which was read out during the observances.

Little two-toed sloth is born at Warsaw Zoo

A little two-toed sloth was born in Warsaw Zoo on December 22, 2021, and therefore its zodiac sign is Capricorn. The fourth child of Amy and Paavo is the fifth sloth born in Warsaw zoological garden.

14-year-old charity volunteers saved an older man's life

They were walking down the street with a donation box, when they noticed through an apartment window that an older man was lying on the floor. They immediately called help. Two teenage girls from Chrustowo (Greater Poland Voivodeship) were praised by the authorities and the police.

Uhlan sabre found at Five Corners Square construction site

Archeologists researching a construction site of Five Corners Square in downtown Warsaw have discovered an Uhlan sabre from early 1920s. The weapon was found in the foundations of a pre-war tenement building at the corner of Szpitalna and Zgoda streets. The artefact has been added to the Polish History Museum collection.

78 years ago Polish resistance killed "Butcher of Warsaw" Franz Kutschera

78 years ago, soldiers from Kedyw - a dedicated Polish special operations unit - carried out a successful assasination of Franz Kutschera, SS and Reich's Police Chief, known as the "Butcher of Warsaw". Kutschera's mission in occupied Warsaw was to spread terror in the city and discredit Poland's underground resistance in the eyes of the civilians. He was sentenced to death by a "Special Court" of the Polish Underground State. He was shot in Aleje Ujazdowskie, one of the city's most prominent boulevards.

Nearly all anaesthesiologists from Kraków children's hospital quit jobs

Majority of anaesthesiologists from the University Children’s Hospital of Kraków (UCH) quit their jobs on Tuesday, the hospital spokesperson informed, adding that scheduled surgeries have been suspended, and admissions halted. The facility now operates in an emergency mode. "We are doing our best to avoid evacuation of patients," the spokesperson stressed.

Sweden returns 16th-century painting looted during WWII to Poland

"The Lamentation of Christ" - a painting by an artist from the workshop of Lucas Cranach the Elder has returned to Poland after being looted during the Second World War. The picture has rejoined Polish collection thanks to restitution efforts by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage, as well curators from the National Museum in Wrocław.
