EU to target Belarus with tighter visa regime in response for pushing migrants

The European Union will tighten visa rules for Belarusian state officials, Europe's migration commissioner said on Wednesday, in retaliation for what she called Minsk's aggressive effort to destabilise the bloc by pushing in irregular migrants. Poland's Ambassador to the EU Andrzej Sadoś told members states on Wednesday that pressure caused by illegal migration wasn't expected to drop, but rather keep on mounting. Furthermore, he said that Belarusian drones were violating Poland's airspace to track movement of Polish Border Guards.

Health minister on COVID infections: we see a developing trend

Poland's Health Minister Adam Niedzielski said on Monday the country saw a developing trend in COVID infections, while countries of Western Europe had the peak of the fourth wave already behind them. According to the minister, Poland could reach a level of 1,000 daily infections by the end of September. "We've also assumed that there would be approx. 5,000 daily cases by the end of October," Niedzielski added.

Murder, cannibalism and pact of silence. Verdict in a horrifying case

A court in Szczecin has sentenced the prime suspect in a murder and cannibalism case for 25 years in prison. The judge found Robert M. guilty of masterminding a murder of an unknown man nearly 20 years ago. Three other men were also accused of eating part of the victim's body, but the court had discontinued the inquiry due to a statute of limitations.

Letters by children from German concentration camp found in Łódź

Researchers from the Museum of Polish Children - Victims of Totalitarianism in Łódź have discovered shocking letters written by children - prisoners of a concentration camp inside the Litzmannstadt Ghetto. The museum director Ireneusz Maj said at a press conference on Friday that "it is an exceptional finding, because only 11 such letters from this camp have been found".

Border Guard: fifth migrant found dead in border area

An Iraqi migrant died after crossing into Poland from Belarus, Polish officials said on Friday, the fifth such death in the border area in the past week amid a surge in illegal migration across the European Union's eastern frontier.

Broadcasting council extends TVN24 licence

Poland's broadcasting regulator on Wednesday extended an operating licence for the popular U.S.-owned, anti-government news channel TVN24, but questioned if it had the right to continue operating, asking the government for legal clarity.

UNCHR and IOM "shocked and dismayed" with deaths of migrants

The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNCHR) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) have called for an immediate access to migrants at the Polish-Belarusian border, in order to provide them with medical assistance, food, water and shelter. The organisations stressed that "asylum-seekers and migrants should never be used by States to achieve political ends".

Man charged with stealing figurines leaves detention and steals another one

A 51-year-old resident of Lublin was released from police detention on Saturday evening. Earlier on he has been charged with stealing two sculptures - a dwarf and a lizard - from the Old Town in Zamość (Lublin province). The latter stood on a window sill next to another lizard figurine. The first one didn't even return to its place, when the other went missing. It was found on Sunday on the 51-year-old.

Highest spike in COVID infections since May

The Ministry of Health informed on Wednesday about 882 new coronavirus cases and the death of 20 COVID patients. Since the start of the pandemic, Poland has reported 2,899,888 infections and 75,523 COVID-related deaths.

Court orders police to return confiscated flag with "Women's Strike" logo

"The court ordered the flag be returned immediately. The judge explained that the for the purposes of the inquiry, which is to determine whether the "Women's Strike" logo desecrated the flag, the police could have made a photographic documentation," says attorney Bartosz Obrębski, who filed a complaint at the court on last year's police intervention in Warsaw.
