PM Morawiecki dismisses junior coalition partner chief Jarosław Gowin

Poland's prime minister on Tuesday requested the dismissal of the head of a junior coalition partner from government, a spokesman said, leaving the future of the administration uncertain as the alliance that has ruled since 2015 fell apart. Asked to comment on the decision, Gowin said it would effectively end the ruling coalition.

Death after police intervention. Prosecutor launches "dynamic inquiry"

The Regional Prosecutor's Office in Lubin (Lower Silesian province) has launched an inquiry into the death of a 34-year-old man after police intervention. The investigators are examining whether the officers overstepped authority and involuntary caused the man's death. The incident sparked a protest which turned into scuffles in front of a police station in Lubin. There were many detained, six officer were injured.

U.S. congressmen warn Polish gov't against passing changes to media law

A group of members of the House Foreign Affairs Committee issued a statement on Friday. The congressmen, both democrat and republican, warned that adoption of planned changes to the media law would be "part and parcel of a troubling trend regarding independent media in Poland". The politicians also stressed that, if passed, the bill would "force the American media company Discovery, which owns TVN24, the country’s largest independent news channel, out of the Polish market".

Poland's Chief Justice on Thursday partially froze a disciplinary chamber for judges at the heart of a deepening dispute with the European Union over judicial independence that could see Warsaw face fines or even an eventual loss of funding. On Friday, a government minister accused the head of Poland's Supreme Court of bowing to the demands of "colonial" European Union officials in a row over the independence of the judiciary that could see Warsaw face financial penalties.

Health ministry says when to expect a peak of fourth coronavirus wave

"Fourth wave of COVID-19 epidemic is slowly gaining momentum" - Health Ministry spokesperson Wojciech Andrusiewicz told TVN24 on Friday. He also said that, according to ministry estimations, the wave was expected to peak between September and October. "If we don't keep vaccinating, we must brace for a peak of up to 15,000 infections daily," he cautioned.

Minister Gowin appoints his dismissed deputy Kornecka as his plenipotentiary

"The United Right is a great value and, in my opinion, it would be worth to continue this project until the end of term, but not at all cost," said Deputy Prime Minister Jarosław Gowin. Later on Friday, the leader of a junior coalition partner, the Accord party, informed that he appointed Anna Kornecka, former deputy development minister freshly dismissed by Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki, as his plenipotentiary for investments and the Green Deal.

Kittens thrown into garbage saved by waste collectors

Someone placed three little cats inside a cardboard box and then threw the box to a waste container. Employees of a waste disposal company saved them from dying. The kittens are now waiting for new owners in an animal shelter in Łódź, while the local City Guard cautions that abandoning animals could be interpreted as cruelty against them.
