The oldest living woman in Poland celebrates her 116th birthday

Tekla Juniewicz celebrates her 116th birthday on Friday (June 10). She was born in Austro-Hungary in 1906, eight years before the outbreak of the First World War. That same year the construction of the Panama Canal was underway, the first plane flight was carried out in Europe, and Maria Skłodowska-Curie gave her first lecture at the Sorbonne. Currently, Tekla Juniewicz is the oldest living woman in Poland and the second living person in the world.

Sejm rejects majority of crucial amendments to Supreme Court bill

In Thursday's vote, Poland's lower house of parliament rejected 23 out of 29 amendments to the bill on the Supreme Court, suggested by the upper house. Among the rejected provisions are all key amendments regarding revoking of rulings issued by the contested Disciplinary Chamber of the Supreme Court. The bill will now be sent over to the president, who may either sign it into law, refuse to sign it, or aks the Constitutional Tribunal to issue an opinion.

Europarliament criticises EU Commission for approving Poland's recovery plan

The European Parliament adopted a resolution in a vote on Thursday (June 9) expressing concern with the fact that the EU Commission had approved Poland's National Recovery Plan on June 1. Among the main reasons for said concern, the MEPs mentioned "existing and continued breaches of the rule of law and the independence of the judiciary" in Poland.

Kraków opens home for adult people with autism spectrum disorder

Social welfare centre in Kraków is opening one of the first support homes for adults with autism spectrum disorder in Poland. Parents of people suffering from ASD are often too old or to weak to continue supporting their adult children, who may not to able to take care of themselves when left on their own. The centre will become a new, peaceful home for its residents, ensuring privacy, rehabilitation and contact with other people.

Andrzej Duda and Joe Biden discussed Polish-American security and economic cooperation

Poland's President Andrzej Duda had a phone conversation on Wednesday with U.S. President Joe Biden, the Chancellery of the President of Poland informed. Among the topics discussed, the chancellery said, was the upcoming summit of the Bucharest Nine format, NATO summit in Madrid, as well as issues related with Ukraine. "Also discussed were ways to increase Poland's security, as well as Polish-American cooperation in the fields of security and economy," President Duda's office added.

One miner dies in an accident at Bogdanka coal mine

A 35-year-old miner died in an accident in the Bogdanka coal mine in eastern Poland early on Wednesday, a police spokesperson said. A prosecutor's office has launched an inquiry into the deadly accident.

European Sovereignty Index: Poland ranked 22nd in the EU

Poland was ranked 22nd out of 27 European Union member states in the European Sovereignty Index, released on Wednesday by the European Council on Foreign Relations and Stiftung Mercator. "With the lowest overall scores of the EU’s five largest members, Poland performs especially poorly in technology, climate, migration, and health," the experts said in the report.

Ukrainian woman suffering from dysmnesia got lost in Warsaw

A refugee from Ukraine arrived in Warsaw together with her sister, but already after a few hours in the city she got lost. City Guard officers found her in the middle of the night in Bielany district. It turned out the woman suffered from dysmnesia.

The National Day of Silesian Uprisings. Poland has new public holiday

The National Day of Silesian Uprisings has been added to the calendar of Polish public holidays. President Andrzej Duda on Tuesday signed a bill in that regard into law. The holiday is to be celebrated on June 20. As the Chancellery of the President informed earlier, it will not be a bank holiday.

Von der Leyen: all milestones must be fulfilled before Poland can receive recovery fund money

A debate on Poland's National Recovery Plan was held in the European Parliament on Tuesday (June 7). In her speech, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said that approval of the plan was "linked in particular to clear commitments by Poland on the independence of the judiciary". "Let me reassure you that no money will be disbursed, until these reforms are undertaken," EU executive chief added.

"Polish women need care, not control". Health minister signs controversial "pregnancy register" ordinance

Poland's Health Minister Adam Niedzielski signed an ordinance on Friday expanding the catalogue of information collected by medical personnel regarding patients by allergies, blood type and pregnancy among other things. The said change has been raising controversy for some time now, with the opposition and some NGOs sounding the alarm in fear that the government's aim is to introduce a "pregnancy register". "We're not creating any registers, but only extending the system of reporting based on European Commission recommendations. Only medics will have access to the data," Health Ministry spokesman Wojciech Andrusiewicz assured. Civic Platform chairman Donald Tusk stressed on Monday that "Polish women need care, not control".

Renourishment of damaged Orłowo beach in Gdynia has begun

The Maritime Office in Gdynia informed that the works aimed to renourish the beach in the Orłowo district have begun. The beach was destroyed by sea storms in winter this year. The cost of sand replenishment has been estimated at approximately 4.5 million zlotys.

Kulczyk Foundation buys Maria Skłodowska-Curie's French summer house

A house in which Maria Skłodowska-Curie used to spend summers with her husband Pierre Curie has been purchased by Kulczyk Foundation. Built in the late 19th century, the house that once belonged to the Polish double Nobel Prize laureate, which has 120 square metres and is surrounded by a garden, has been placed on the French heritage sites list. Once the building has been renovated, it will host the House of Sisterhood, a place where exceptional women from across Europe will be meeting and working together.

9-year-old boy brings unexploded WWII anti-aircraft missile home

A resident of the Mościce district in the city of Tarnów (Lesser Poland Voivodeship) called the police after his 9-year-old son had brought an object resembling a missile. It later turned out that it was indeed an unexploded ordnance from the WWII period.

Polish Border Guard: nearly 3.8 million people entered Poland from Ukraine since Feb. 24

Since the beginning of war in Ukraine, Polish Border Guard cleared nearly 3.8 million people entering the country from Ukraine. Approximately 22,500 people entered Poland from Ukraine on Thursday alone, the Border Guard said on Friday. Poland was the European Union country that in March granted temporary protection to the highest number of Ukrainians fleeing war, while other countries have since increased how many people they are sheltering, EU data showed on Friday.

Hedgehog crossing a road saved from nearly-certain death

A hedgehog was only centimetres from certain death under car wheels but, thanks to a quick reaction by one of the drivers, the animal survived. Shortly after, a woman picked the hedgehog up and took him to a safe spot. The rescue mission was backed up by a car hauler driver. The whole incident, that took place in Warsaw's Gocław neighbourhood, was captured on dashcam video.

Who should be president? Donald Tusk: it's obvious

"Please wish every other party such good cooperation between its leaders like we have," Poland's former prime minister Donald Tusk told TVN24. He was referring to his relations with his party colleague and Warsaw Mayor Rafał Trzaskowski. In Tusk's opinion, Trzaskowski should become Poland's new president.
