The Sejm on Tuesday passed a coronavirus rescue package, known as the "anti-crisis shield", but rejected the majority of amendments proposed by the opposition-controlled Senate. The rejected changes included additional 20 billion zloty in healthcare spending, mandatory weekly coronavirus tests for all healthcare workers and broadened exemptions for firms to pay social security payments.

Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki announced in Tuesday (March 31) further restrictions have been imposed to slow down the spread of the coronavirus. The new rules include keeping 2-meter distance in public places, special shopping hours for the elderly. All previously introduced measures remain binding. A fine from 5,000 up to 30,000 zloty may be imposed for violation of those regulations.

President Andrzej Duda said if there are no safety guarantees in May, the presidential election should be postponed. "There's no need at the moment to announce a state of natural disaster or a state of emergency" - he added.

"We are expecting a very rapid growth in the number of infections in the coming weeks," Health Minister Łukasz Szumowski said on Monday. He added that further restrictions on people's movements were needed as earlier measures were not sufficient to contain the virus.

The Speaker of the Senate Tomasz Grodzki announced on Monday (March 30) he would submit a variety of amendments to the so-called anti-crisis shield. "We want to replace an imperfect, punctured shield with a better one, a true and solid dam that would prevent the spillage of the pandemic" - he explained. Michał Dworczyk, a top aide to the Prime Minister, said on Monday Poland was considering introducing further measures aimed at curbing the coronavirus pandemic and its negative effects.

Poland's Krzysztof Penderecki, one of the world's most celebrated composers, died on Sunday at the age of 86, his family said.

"I'm fully suspending my campaign. I will focus solely on my duties as a member of Polish parliament" - Civic Platform's presidential candidate Małgorzata Kidawa-Błońska declared on Sunday (March 29). She also called on other candidates to boycott the vote scheduled for May 10. Poland's Health Ministry has reported 1862 coronavirus infection so far. Twenty two infected people have died in Poland.

On very early morning on Saturday (March 28), Poland's lower house passed draft regulations aimed at tackling the effects of coronavirus epidemic. During the chamber's session, ruling Law and Justice (PiS) party submitted a last-minute amendment changing the electoral code. PiS, as well as the biggest opposition faction - Civic Coalition, voted in favour of the bill. The latter, however, voted against the provisions regarding elections.

More than 3,000 Ukrainian citizens, with no private means of transport, gathered on Friday at the border crossing in Korczowa (Subcarpathian Voivodeship). Restrictions imposed by Ukraine dictate that people can only cross the border in a car. Furthermore, Ukrainian authorities decided to close the borders as of Friday night. Polish border guard informed all control gates were operating.

Polish authorities reported on Friday (March 27) the number of coronavirus infected people has jumped to 1389 with 16 deaths so far. Although the number of cases is highly likely to raise further, it is still low compared to other European countries.

So far in Poland 16 people have died after being infected with SARS-CoV-2, health ministry informed on Thursday (March 26) evening. The number of confirmed infections has gone up to 1.221. The government maintains the May 10 presidential election will not be postponed. The lower house passed regulations allowing the chamber's sessions to be carried out online. The draft law referred to as "Anti-crisis shield", finalised by the government, has been sent to the Sejm.

Health ministry informed on Wednesday (March 25) that 1051 cases of coronavirus infection have been confirmed in Poland. So far, 14 infected persons have died. The government also extended border closure for further 20 days, until April 13. Development minister Jadwiga Emilewicz informed the cabinet has accepted all provisions of draft legislation that would aid businesses and employees affected by the coronavirus crisis.

Polish health ministry reported on Tuesday evening there have been 901 confirmed cases of coronavirus infection since the outbreak of the epidemic. Ten people with the virus have died so far. On Tuesday (March 24) a total of 152 coronavirus cases were confirmed, which is the highest number on a single day since the outbreak.

Poland's Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki announced on Tuesday (March 24) further restrictions regarding public gatherings and public transport. The number of confirmed coronavirus cases has gone up to 774. Nine infected people have died so far.

Poland's justice ministry is considering allowing more prisoners to serve their sentences at home under the electronic supervision system. The plan comes in response to the coronavirus crisis and is aimed to lower the risk of infections hike among the prisoners.

Polish government officials say further restriction may be implemented on citizens as the country expects a drastic increase of coronavirus infections in the coming days. So far, the authorities have already closed schools, cinemas and theatres, limited public gatherings to no more than 50 people, banned the entry of foreigners and introduced a "state of epidemic".

The coronavirus pandemic has left no better choice for UEFA than to postpone this season's Champions League, Europa League and women's Champions League finals scheduled for May. The decision came after last week's unprecedented resolution to postpone the Euro 2020 tournament for the following year.

The Ministry of Health informed on Monday (March 23) shortly after 8pm about further 57 coronavirus infections. The tally for that day was 116 confirmed cases and death of one person who had been infected earlier on. The 83-year-old male died in a hospital in Tychy, Silesia. In total, 749 people have been infected since the outbreak of the coronavirus epidemic.

Polish authorities reported 111 new coronavirus infection cases on Saturday (March 21). The total number has therefore gone up to 536. So far, five infected people have died. Poland's National Security Council is set to meet on Monday at noon. Activists all over the country step up efforts to help the medical service employees who have had their hands full of work in recent weeks, often doing excessive overtime treating coronavirus-infected people.

Poland's Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki announced on Friday the government has introduced the state of epidemic. The number of coronavirus infections went up to 411 as of March 20 afternoon.

Seventeen staff members at a coronavirus testing laboratory have been placed under quarantine after one of the employees tested positive for SARS-CoV-2. None of the people involved in the diagnostics process have shown symptoms of the virus as of yet. The laboratory was being decontaminated and, according to its chief, should resume operating within 48 hours.

Poland's health minister Łukasz Szumowski informed on Thursday there were 38 more confirmed cases of coronavirus infection in Poland. The total number of infections went up to 325. Five people died. Poland's "patient zero" has left the hospital after recovering from coronavirus infection.

Polish government put forward a relief package on Wednesday (March 18) to ease economic losses incurred by the country due to coronavirus crisis. Prime Minister Morawiecki said the economic fallout of the outbreak could be worse than the 2008 financial disaster. Health ministry announced there were 287 confirmed cases of coronavirus infection, of which five people died.

Polish government informed on Monday that the number of coronavirus infection cases has gone above 150. So far three people have died after contracting the virus, yet all had suffered from other diseases. Health ministry informed that nearly 800 people were hospitalised with suspicion of the virus, wheres over 10.000 were placed under quarantine.

Poland's Ministry of Health reported on Saturday (March 14) evening another 10 coronavirus infection cases. The total number of infections has gone up to 103. Three people have died after contracting the virus.

President Andrzej Duda has announced that he planned an initiative to ease payment of loan installments for citizens and businesses affected by the coronavirus crisis. "I have asked banks to allow clients to delay loan payments for at least several months" - the president informed.

Poland reported 64 cases of coronavirus on Friday (March 13), yet the president announced the country was not considering introducing a state of emergency over the crisis. "The number of new confirmed infections is smaller than expected" - said President Andrzej Duda.

There are 16 new confirmed cases of coronavirus infection in Poland - the Ministry of Health informed on Thursday (March 12). Total number of infection in Poland has gone up to 47. Health minister reassures hospitals are ready to handle the inevitable, yet foreseeable surge in the number of new infections. Poles should work from home due to the coronavirus outbreak - the Prime Minister's Chief of Staff Michał Dworczyk said on Thursday.

The World Health Organization is describing the new coronavirus as a pandemic, it said on Wednesday, adding that Italy and Iran were now in the frontline of the disease and other countries would soon join them.

Poland is closing all schools, universities, cinemas, theaters and museums for two weeks from Thursday to curtail the spread of the coronavirus, government representatives said on Wednesday. The number of confirmed cases in Poland has gone up to 31.
