"Do not be indifferent". Auschwitz survivor Marian Turski delivers powerful address

"Do not be indifferent in the face of historical lies. Do not be indifferent when you see the past being exploited for the needs of contemporary politics. Do not be indifferent when any minority suffers discrimination. For it's the essence of democracy that the majority wields the power, but at the same time, the rights of the minority must be respected," former prisoner of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration and death camp, Marian Turski, said on Monday during the commemoration of the 75th anniversary of the camp's liberation. He stressed that indifference may cause "an Auschwitz suddenly fall down on you from the skies". Mr Turski also urged younger generations not to "be indifferent when any government violates the already established social contracts".

The presidents of Poland and Ukraine called on Monday (January 27) for greater global efforts to combat anti-Semitism, racism and xenophobia as the world marked 75 years since the liberation of the Auschwitz death camp amid concerns over a resurgence of anti-Jewish prejudice.

They also appealed to the president to meet them in order to hear why should he veto the amendment.

The Sejm voted 234-211 to disregard the rejection by the Senate of a law which would allow judges who criticise the government's reforms to be disciplined. The bill will now become law if it is signed by President Andrzej Duda, a PiS ally. Simultaneously, the Supreme Court that judges appointed under new government rules do not have the right to issue judgements there. The ruling PiS party claim the top Polish court has no right to pass such verdict.

Competence dispute between lower house and Supreme Court

Due to the Constitutional Tribunal's (TK) launching an inquiry at the request of the Speaker of the Sejm, Thursday's session of three chambers of the Supreme Court has been suspended - the head of Polish constitutional court judge Julia Przyłębska announced on Wednesday. Polish-Russian WWII dispute continues ahead of Auschwitz liberation anniversary

Court laws bill rejected by Senate likely to become law anyway soon

The Senate decided on Friday to reject court laws amendment in full and now the draft legislation will return the lower house, where the ruling PiS party has enough seats to overrule the upper chamber's decision. This is a very likely scenario, so the bill should eventually land on the president's desk. If ratified, the bill would become law, despite countless red flags waved both in Poland and internationally.
