Tokarczuk: my acceptance speech might have influenced Polish parliamentary elections

"My spontaneous reaction was to dedicate this award to the democratic movement in Poland and I asked people to vote for democracy and against totalitarian tendencies and this speech of mine was quite warmly received and I think it might have had some influence on the elections," Olga Tokarczuk said at a press conference at the Swedish Academy in Stockholm on Friday, marking the start of the Nobel Week. During the following days, the laureates will give press conferences and hold their Nobel Lectures. The week culminates in the Nobel Prize award ceremony and banquet on 10 December and ends with visits to the Nobel Foundation. The Nobel Peace Prize is awarded in Oslo, Norway.

Angela Merkel and Mateusz Morawiecki laid wreaths at the Auschwitz Death Wall

German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki have paid their respects to the victims of the death-camp in Auschwitz-Birkenau. Then two heads of state laid wreaths at the Death Wall in the courtyard of Block 11, followed by Auschwitz museum director Piotr Cywiński placing a urn with a candle at the wall.

Internal Security Agency launches inquiry into NIK president Marian Banaś

The opposition is demanding that the report from the verification process conducted by the Central Anti-Corruption Bureau (CBA) to be presented to the Sejm. Meanwhile, the Internal Security Agency (ABW) has launched its own verification process concerning the President of the Supreme Audit Office (NIK). Marian Banaś has explicitly stated that he will not step down. Now, yet another question arises - will he have a security clearance needed to fulfil his duty as president of the NIK?

Headmaster dismissed after simulated terrorist attack on school terrified students

A group of armed men wearing balaclavas and military outfits stormed into an elementary school in Barczewo and made noise with firecrackers. Some children panicked, one even jumped out of the window. The students had no idea that this was a planned simulation of terrorist attack ordered by the headmaster, who was dismissed shortly after the terrifying drill. The mayor of Barczewo also notified the prosecutor's office.

"We won't be intimidated". Judge Krystian Markiewicz with 55 disciplinary charges

Chairman of Polish Judges' Association "Iustitia" Krystian Markiewicz has been accused of committing 55 disciplinary misconducts. Among them is inciting to disrespecting "of Poland's legal order" - informed the disciplinary spokesperson for common courts Piotr Schab. "If I were to stop defending the rule of law as a judge, then I'd rather cease to be a judge," Markiewicz said in response.

Senate Marshal Grodzki met with EP President Sassoli in Brussels

The Marshal of the Senate Tomasz Grodzki has met with the President of the European Parliament David Sassoli in Brussels. "It was a very nice, constructive meeting," said the Italian politician. Marshal Grodzki declared his readiness for cooperation between the Senate and the EU Parliament.

"I was ready to submit resignation but I became a victim of brutal political game" - the President of the Supreme Audit Office (NIK) Marian Banaś said in a statement on Wednesday. He declared he was ready to asnwer any questions asked by investigators, and if need be, to give up his immunity. "I shall continue my mission with a sense of responsibility," he added.

Polish teens among the world's best in PISA test for 15-year-olds

Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA), organised by the OECD, tested the academic abilities of 15-year-olds. Science, math and reading comprehension are the subjects in which Polish middle schoolers found themselves ranked among the highest in Europe and the world.
