"Colonel House". A documentary about a true, yet forgotten hero of Polish independence

Edward Mandell House is a figure that both Europe and Poland owe so much. He was a much trusted advisor to American President Thomas Woodrow Wilson and a friend of the Polsih artist and Prime Minister Ignacy Jan Paderewski. Despite all that, he was almost completely forgotten. A documentary film "Colonel House", by the Polish section of Discovery Group, tells the story of this remarkable individual.

Solicitor mentioned amid the KNF scandal sits in a supervisory board of a bank

Marek Chrzanowski, now former head of the financial market watchdog, reportedly asked a bank owner to hire a specific lawyer for a huge fee in return for preferencial treatment by the regulator. That recommended lawyer is said to be Grzegorz Kowalczyk, an acquaintance of Mr Chrzanowski. What makes the story even more interesting is that Mr Kowalczyk is a member of the supervisory board of a bank owned by another business mogul in Poland.

The opposition wants a special parliamentary commission to investigate the KNF scandal

The number one story in Poland is the KNF-gate. The KNF is the Polish state financial market regulator. Its former chief has been recorded while soliciting a bribe from the owner of a troubled bank. Shortly before the scandal broke out, the KNF insisted on its office being granted more power to decide on banks resolutions. The government claims that the bill on the banks should not be linked to the scandal and that it's in line with the EU regulations. The opposition, however, wants a special parliamentary commission to investigate the case.

New Delhi in Poland. Bacteria resistant to antibiotics detected in a hospital

A case of New Delhi super-bacteria has been diagnosed in Piotrków Trybunalski, south of Łódź. The highly contagious and life-threatening bacteria was detected in a woman in a local hospital. She was immediately quarantined, so that no other patients or staff would get infected. Furthermore, the internal medicine ward in the hospital was closed off.

U.S. cinematogapher detained for alleged assault on police and paramedics

A Hollywood cinematographer has been detained by the Polish police and charged. Matthew L., according to the Polish law we cannot disclose his full name, got in trouble by assaulting a paramedic while being drunk. He needed their help after, most likely, getting into a fight. Matthew L. is a renowned American artist who is best known for his work with director Darren Aronovski. He has also worked on such hits like "Iron Man" and "A Star is Born". He was a guest of the Camerimage movie festival in Bydgoszcz. If found guilty, he might spend three years in prison.

British Prime Minister Theresa May won the backing of her senior ministers for a draft European Union divorce deal on Wednesday, freeing her to tackle the much more perilous struggle of getting parliament to approve the agreement.

Polish PM orders swift investigation into financial oversight chief's corruption allegations

The meeting between PM Morawiecki, Justice Minister Ziobro and the heads of services was called in to discuss the actions taken in regard to the issue of recordings of the former chief of the Financial Oversight Authority (KNF); the prime minister urged the institutions to cooperation aimed at the quickest possible solving of the case, the spokeswoman for the government Joanna Kopcińska informed on Tuesday evening.

Paweł Pawlikowski's drama "Cold War" nominated for European Film Award

Paweł Pawkikowski's "Cold War" is leading European Film Award nominations. The Polish drama has a big chance to win the award for best European Picture in this year's competition. Also with nominations are Joanna Kulig, for best leading actress, Tomasz Kot for leading actor and Paweł Pawlikowski who is nominated in two categories: for best director and best screenplay.
