U.S. House speaker Nancy Pelosi visits former Auschwitz camp
U.S. House speaker Nancy Pelosi visited the museum on the site of the former Auschwitz concentration camp in southern Poland on Tuesday (January 21).
Pelosi was leading a bipartisan delegation of U.S. representatives to the site to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the camp's liberation by Soviet soldiers, according to a news release on her office's website.
The delegation will also travel to Jerusalem to participate in the World Holocaust Forum's commemoration ceremony at Yad Vashem, the statement said.
World leaders will gather at the events at Yad Vashem on Thursday (January 23) and Auschwitz on January 27th to mark the anniversary.
Auschwitz was the largest of the concentration camps and extermination centres built by the Nazis in occupied Poland, with more than 1.1 million men, women and children dying there. Most of them were Jews, some six million of whom were killed in the Holocaust.
