Presidential poll ahead of July 12 election run-off

Kantar pollster conducted a poll for "Fakty" TVN and TVN24 regarding the second round of presidential election scheduled for July 12. Respondents were asked the following question: Which candidate will you vote for in the second round of presidential election?".

Rafał Trzaskowski was picked by 46,4 percent of respondents. This is 0,6 percentage points less than in the analogous poll by Kantar carried out on July 2-3.

Andrzej Duda was picked by 45,9 percent of respondents, which is 0,1 percentage points less than in the previous poll by Kantar.

7,7 percent of those asked chose the "don't know" answer, which is 0,7 percentage points more than in the previous poll.

The phone survey by Kantar for "Fakty" TVN and TVN24 was carried out on July 8-9 on a nationwide, representative sample of 1500 adults.

In the poll by Kantar for "Fakty" TVN and TVN24, carried out on July 2-3, Rafał Trzaskowski was ahead of Andrzej Duda by 1 percentage point. 47 percent of respondents declared support for the Warsaw mayor, whereas 46 percent said they would vote for the incumbent president.

Seven percent of those asked on July 3 said they did not know who they would vote for.

Poles will cast their ballots on Sunday (July 12) in the second round of the country's presidential election, which sees the incumbent and ruling conservatives' ally Andrzej Duda facing off against liberal challenger Rafał Trzaskowski.

The president's role is largely ceremonial in Poland, but he has the power to veto legislation put forward by parliament.

The run-off ballot on July 12 could become a turning point in the country's troubled relations with the European Union.

The centrist mayor of Warsaw, Rafal Trzaskowski, appears to have a shot at unseating conservative incumbent Andrzej Duda, who together with the nationalist Law and Justice (PiS) government has presided over a deepening rift with Brussels.

Under Duda and PiS, which won national elections in 2015 and 2019, Warsaw has frequently stood alone or in a minority on a range of policy areas that the EU aims to decide by consensus.

While the president has only limited influence on policy of the PiS-led government of Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki, a win by Trzaskowski could precipitate a shift.

Duda got the most votes in the first round of elections on June 28 with 43.50% of the vote in the first-round and Trzaskowski came second with 30.46%, but four days before the election opinion polling puts the two candidates neck-and-neck.
