"I hope some afterthought will follow" - said senator Marek Martynowski after he stepped down as chief of the PiS Senate club and deputy chief of the party's parliamentary club. He explained his resignation came as a result of appointing Krzysztof Sobolewski as party's secretary general. In his opinion, "a shred of honour would dictate not to accept this job".
On Tuesday afternoon senator Marek Martynowski announced on social media that he would resign as chief of the PiS Senate club and deputy chief of the party's parliamentary club. He explained that his decision was motivated by "fight" against nepotism within the ruling party ranks.
He specified that the move was a protest against appointing Krzysztof Sobolewski as chief of the PiS Political Council, whose wife has recently been a member of supervisory boards in three State Treasury companies: Szczecin-Goleniów airport, Anwil and Orlen Paliwa. On Sunday Sobolewski informed his wife was no longer a member of the said boards.
Martynowski said that the Political Council "first adopted a resolution condemning nepotism, and then appointed a secretary general who is a symbol of nepotism". "Hence my decision" - he added.
Asked by reporters how his resignation was received by the party, he said that the chief of PiS parliamentary club Ryszard Terlecki understood his decision. "I also think he partially agrees with me" - he said.
"It's illogical to me that on the one hand we unanimously adopt the resolution, and then 60 people vote against the secretary general, who at the moment is a symbol of nepotism. No logic in all this" - Martynowski said.
Asked why he thought Krzysztof Sobolewski was "a symbol of nepotism", he replied: "We all know his wife works as a director at Orlen, earlier on she was in three supervisory boards, I know that she has resigned as member". "Her resignation from supervisory board memberships is, in my opinion, disrespectful of the voters" - he argued.
Asked if Sobolewski was not appointed secretary general, he would not have stepped down, he said: "Of course I would have acted otherwise. I think that a shred of honour would dictate not to accept this job".
Martynowski added that he hoped that his resignation would result in some "afterthought". "Secretary general is a really important function, as he approves electoral lists. I might become a victim of this resolution on (fighting) nepotism, as most likely I won't be on the list of candidates to the Senate."
"I have stepped down, but I remain in the party and the club, I will remain a loyal member, but I have the right not to agree with certain things" - the senator said.
