European Commission chief Jean-Claude Juncker told the EU's eastern states on Wednesday he would fight for equal rights for their consumers, but their workers would not be allowed to unfairly undercut those in western members.

The European Union's executive gave Poland on Tuesday one month to address concerns over a judiciary overhaul or face a court challenge, stepping up pressure over Warsaw's reforms which critics say undermine the independence of the courts.

European Union states will this month debate increasing pressure on Poland to uphold the rule of law, sources said, as the next stage in a process that could see its government formally denounced as anti-democratic.

The EU executive said on Wednesday it was ready to institute court proceedings within weeks that could lead to fines for Poland, Hungary and the Czech Republic if they refuse to take in asylum-seekers from Italy and Greece.

“For the majority of Poles, being a member of the EU is of great value,” President Duda stressed when opening the Economic Forum in Krynica this Tuesday. “The Poles support the EU of ‘open doors’” he added. However, as he stressed, “The EU needs to review its internal policy.”

New car registrations in Poland jumped 16.4 percent last month from a year earlier, data showed on Tuesday, helped by corporate purchases as a strong economy enabled companies to spend more.

Russian Foreign Minister said on Friday that Polish authorities brainwash its population in what he called an attempt to create an atmosphere of total intolerance to everything related to Russia.
