OSCE: media bias and intolerant rhetoric marred Polish otherwise correct elections

The Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) published a preliminary statement regarding Polish parliamentary elections held on Sunday, October 13. International observers monitoring the vote expressed their concerns regarding shortfalls in certain areas. "The campaign environment was highly polarized and became increasingly negative, while campaign messages containing nationalist and homophobic rhetoric gave rise to a sense of threat," OSCE wrote in a press release on its website on Tuesday.

Final election results. PiS wins lower house majority but loses the Senate

Five committees have passed the minimum threshold of votes to enter the Sejm (lower house of parliament): Law and Justice, Civic Coalition, the Left, Polish People's Party and Confederation. German Minority will also participate in the seat distribution - the National Electoral Commission informed on Monday, announcing the final results of the parlimentary vote. The ruling Law and Justice party has lost the majority in the Senate (upper house) to the opposition parties united under the so-called Senate pact.

National Electoral Commission counted over 99 percent of votes

The National Electoral Commission has announced the parliamentary election results from 99,49 percent of constituencies. Law and Justice won 43,76 percent of votes; Civic Coalition - 27,24 percent; the Left - 12,52 percent; Polish People's Party - 8,58 percent; Confederation - 6,79 percent.

Poland's ruling conservative Law and Justice party won the parliamentary election on Sunday with 43.6 percent of votes, according to exit poll published by IPSOS. Liberal Civic Coalition got the second result with 27.4 percent. The Left came third with 11.9 percent, Polish People's Party won 9.6 percent, whereas far-right parties coalition - Confederation - managed to secure 6.4 percent of votes. The turnout was 61.1 percent. Late poll published before 2 am on Monday shows slight changes in the result of two committees.

The new National Council of the Judiciary (KRS) is not safeguarding independence and freedom of the courts. It's not a voice of judicial circles, it's a voice of politicians and a tool used to politicise courts - said judge Igor Tuleya, at a conference "7 sins against the state of law", during which changes made by the ruling PiS party were criticised. 8.5 kilos of heroin found in suitcases at Warsaw Chopin Airport

Officers from Masovian Customs and Tax Control Office have found narcotics of estimated worth of 1.7 million zlotys at the Chopin Airport in Warsaw. The heroin weighing over 8.5 kilograms was hidden in suitcases - the Chamber of Fiscal Admistration (IAS) informed on Thursday.

Defense minister signs Polish army modernisation plan for 2021-2035

Poland's defense minister Mariusz Błaszczak on Thursday signed a Plan of Technical Modernisation of Polish Armed Forces for years 2021-2035. The plan assumes spending a total of 524 billion zlotys - in 2025 spending on modernisation are to equal 24 billion zlotys, and 50 billion in 2050.

Poll for "Fakty" TVN and TVN24: PiS in the lead; 5 parties in the Sejm

Parliamentary elections in Poland are just round the corner. On Sunday, Poles will cast their votes to choose candidates they want to see in the Sejm and the Senate. According to Kantar poll for "Fakty" TVN and TVN24, the last one before elections, the ruling Law and Justice party would win with 40 percent of votes. Civic Coalition would take the second result with 26 percent. In total, all five nationwide committees would secure seats in the parliament, the survey suggests.
