The EU's top official, Donald Tusk, a former Polish prime minister, joked on Wednesday about the removal by Polish authorities of a plaque bearing his name, saying it was more important they did not "unscrew" Poland from the European Union.

Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babis suggested using European Union funds earmarked for security and defence for making agreements with North African countries to reduce the number of migrants coming to Europe while on a visit to Warsaw on Monday.

Bydgoszcz is on the brink of a natural disaster. The city is lying on a barrel of ammunition, almost literally. The local production of TNT generates hundreds of millions zlotys, as well as masses of toxic waste, which leaks into the ground waters. TVN "Superwizjer" revealed that the strong poison is circulating just under the homes of local residents.

The Polish petro-chemicals giant PGNiG has signed two contracts with American companies. They provide for long-term import of liquefied natural gas. The company's CEO has stated that this gas will be over 20 percent cheaper than Russian gas. During PGNiG's morning conference, the Polish Prime Minister and the American Ambassador to Poland also made an appearance.

Election campaign is nearly over as the electoral silence begins midnight on Friday. Rafał Trzaskowski has declared a 24-hour fight right up until the last second of campaign time. Patryk Jaki has gone even further, and has vowed not to rest for 36 hours. The polls show that Warsaw will not do without a second round of elections.

The campaign is also tense in Łódź - the third largest city in Poland. The row regarding the incumbent mayor continues. Fighting for reelection is Hanna Zdanowska who has recently been found guilty of making untrue statements in banking documents. She has been sentenced to fine and for this reason, according to the Voivode of Łódź, she should not run for office again.

The race for Warsaw mayor is in the home straight. It's the most important battle in the local elections campaign in Poland due to the economic and prestigious significance of the capital. The favourite to win is Rafał Trzaskowski who represents the opposition, but his main rival Patryk Jaki who has the support of the ruling party is not that far behind. The opposition is accusing the government of dirty tricks, for example of blackmail that if their candidate does not win, they will not support big investments in the city.

What Zbigniew Ziobro has done is interpreted by his critics as much more than just asking questions. The opposition says the government is apparently preparing to take Poland out of the European Union. Although the absolute majority of Poles claim that membership in the union is beneficial to the country, Law and Justice has been in permanent conflict with Brussels since coming to power. Now, the party's critics say that most likely Poland will either leave the block or finally become a troublemaker that no one treats seriously.

Rafał Trzaskowski received the highest support from voters in a candidates for mayor of Warsaw survey by KANTAR Millward Brown for TVN24 and "Fakty" TVN. According to the poll, the Civic Coalition's candidate would get 42 percent of votes in the first round, whereas his main rival, United Right's candidate Patryk Jaki would get 30 percent of votes. The poll also predicts that Trzaskowski would win by a large margin also in the second round.

The Polish Public Prosecutor General who is also the Minister of Justice wants to know how compatible is the Treaty of the European Union with the Polish Constitution. Zbigniew Ziobro's question is connected to one article of the treaty and he wants the Polish Constitutional Tribunal to respond. He claims that his motion concerns preliminary questions but it is also being interpreted as calling into question the validity of the European law.

The Polish President has nominated justices to the Supreme Court in spite of an injunction halting the process. President Duda claims he knew nothing of the document when he acted. A representative of Polish Judges' Association "Iustitia" has shown a document proving that it actually had been delivered to the president's office.

"Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki met Mr Robert Kubica and they cleared the matter off," said the Deputy Speaker of the Senate, Adam Bielan. He was referring to another act of the tape scandal involving Mr Morawiecki. The prime minister, who had been a bank CEO at the time when he got recorded, has found himself under the wave of criticism yet again. He was caught saying that the serious injury sustained by a world-famous Polish rally driver Robert Kubica was actually a positive information from the bank's perspective, as it didn't have to sponsor Mr Kubica anymore. A group of famous Polish sports figures spoke out publicly against what they called double standards that the PM holds in regard to sportspeople.

European Union ministers discussed for the sixth time on Tuesday concerns that Poland's ruling nationalists are undercutting democratic institutions in their country, although ultimately there may be little the bloc can do about the problem.

It's the final countdown before the local elections in Poland next Sunday. All sides of the political spectrum are in a fervour. The ruling party dreams of winning in the big cities, which are the opposition's strongholds. The opposition, on the other hand, yearns for a glimmer of hope before the next year's parliamentary elections. Here's how the battlefield looks before the showdown begins.

President Andrzej Duda and the First Lady paid a visit to Pope Francis. Mr Duda says the Pope praised the social programmes introduced by the Polish government, but also inquired about the Polish vision of Europe. Poland's First Couple gave the Pope a painting and a food basket with Polish specialties. Pope Francis gave his guest a copy of a medallion with St. Peter's Square.

Civic Platform is sending another so-called convoy of shame out into Poland. This time, the headline snippets of Mateusz Morawiecki’s statements from recordings recently revealed in the tape scandal. The convoy will end when election silence begins. During Civic Coalition’s election convention on Sunday, direct references were made to the prime minister’s opinions that were voiced in conversations illegally caught on tape at a Warsaw restaurant several years ago.

It was the last Sunday before local elections. Politicians were wasting no time and organised meetings with voters. Law and Justice was in Kraków where Jarosław Kaczyński and Mateusz Morawiecki expressed their support for Małgorzata Wassemann who is running for local mayor. The leader of Law and Justice also reminded listeners of the role of local governments, as well as a little about their history.

In Lublin, Eastern Poland, over 20 people were detained after they tried to block the Equality March on Saturday. The prosecutor will accuse them of assault on a police officer, taking part in a fight and robbery. They threw rocks, firecrackers and bottles at law enforcement officials. More arrests are expected as surveillance footage is being analysed.
