Inflation in Poland in September this year was at 15.7% year on year, according to a report released by Eurostat. This is one of the highest spikes in consumer prices in the European Union. The highest inflation in the bloc last month was recorded in Estonia and Lithuania, and the lowest in France and Malta.
"The euro area annual inflation rate was 9.9% in September 2022, up from 9.1% in August. A year earlier, the rate was 3.4%" - the statistical office of the European Union said on Wednesday (October 20).
"European Union annual inflation was 10.9% in September 2022, up from 10.1% in August. A year earlier, the rate was 3.6%" - the report said.
Eurostat added that the lowest annual rates were registered in France (6.2%), Malta (7.4%) and Finland (8.4%).
"The highest annual rates were recorded in Estonia (24.1%), Lithuania (22.5%) and Latvia (22.0%). Compared with August, annual inflation fell in six Member States, remained stable in one and rose in twenty," we read.
In September - Eurostat said - the highest contribution to the annual euro area inflation rate came from energy (+4.19 percentage points, pp), followed by food, alcohol & tobacco (+2.47 pp), services (+1.80 pp) and non-energy industrial goods (+1.47 pp).
According to Eurostat, September inflation in Poland was at 15.7% year on year. Only six countries in the EU recorded higher increase in consumer prices: Estonia (24.1%), Lithuania (22.5%), Latvia (22.0%), Hungary (20.7%), Czech Republic (17.8%), and the Netherlands (17.1%).
Annual inflation is the change of the price level of consumer goods and services between the current month and the same month of the previous year.
Monthly inflation is the change of the price level between the current month and the previous month.
A contribution shows how much of the annual inflation rate comes from a particular component of the HICP. The contributions are calculated according to a method which ensures their additivity (allowing for rounding).
According to a different indicator - used by Poland's Central Statistical Office (Statistics Poland) - prices in Poland in September of 2022 increased by 17.2% year on year. This has been the highest spike since February, 1997, which was more than 25 years ago.
