Protesting farmers set up a cross of potted flowers in the middle of Piłsudski Square in Warsaw on Tuesday morning. "Flower producers are in a tragic situation, they can't sell their products," said Agrounia movement which organised the symbolic protest.
The farmers gathered at Piłsudski Square after 8 a.m. on Tuesday. Among them was their leader Michał Kołodziejczak.
Reporter Tomasz Zieliński from tvnwarszawa.pl was also at the scene. "Two delivery cars arrived at the square. A few people got off and rolled out shelf trolleys with potted flowers. They placed the pots on the ground forming a shape of a cross. They set it up right next to the Papal Cross," Zieliński said.
He added that the protesters were approached by a few police officers who asked questions about the gathering. "It appeared they hadn't been informed about the event," the reporter said. More police officers later arrived at at the scene.
The farmers explained on Facebook why they had chosen this form of protest. "Today Warsaw will learn that although beautiful, flowers are a burder and a problem this season. There's no way to sell them. Holland is taking over Polish flower market. We have brought 6,000 flowers to Piłsudski Square in Warsaw. Flower producers are in a tragic situation, they can't sell their products. Polish market has been flooded with plants from Holland. If the situation doesn't change, the flowers will land in garbage or fade," Agrounia explained on Facebook.
