Polish volunteer army downsized but not short of recruits

Volunteers have been eagerly joining Poland's volunteer militia at a rapid rate, but the country's defence ministry seems to be reining in ambitions for the formation, conceived to help defend the eastern European state from a possible invasion.

S8 road was blocked by protesting pig and poultry producers

A group of protesting farmers were blocking the S8 road towards Wrocław. As the leader of AGROunia organisation Michał Kołodziejczak said: "the farmers blocking the road were lied to yet again". The protesters were mostly pig and poultry producers who say they struggle to stay in business due to too low wholesale prices.

Luxembourgish trail in SKOK Wołomin credit union scandal

Prosecutor General Zbigniew Ziobro and National Public Prosecutor Bogdan Święczkowski are withholding "three years of operation of an organised crime group inside SKOK Wołomin" as this credit union was at that time under the supervision of Law and Justice senator Grzegorz Bierecki, claim Civic Platform MPs. Throughout the week appeared a controversy regarding Mr Bierecki's testimony in regard to SKOK, as neither the National Public Prosecutor, nor the senator himself were able to ascertain when the hearing took place. For a moment the senator claimed that he did not testify at all, but shortly after, he changed his mind.

Court sentenced a couple who abused and tortured two young boys

A heavy punishment for a man and a woman who were behind the house of tortures. The way in which the mother of two boys and together with her boyfriend is hard to describe in words. The 7- and 9-year-old boys were beaten, burned with cigarettes, fed raw meat and raped. All this happened in the centre for victim of violence. The court in Koszalin sentenced the couple - the woman for 15 years and the man for 25 years in prison.

U.N. climate talks deadlocked over carbon credit issue

United Nations' climate talks to agree on the rules of the 2015 Paris Agreement became deadlocked late on Saturday over the monitoring of carbon credits to reduce emissions, in marathon negotiations which have already overrun.

Poland marked the 37th anniversary of martial law introduction

Thirty seven years ago on Sunday the 13th of December 1981 martial law was declared in Poland. At 6 a.m. a radio announcement by General Wojciech Jaruzelski informed Poles about the implementation of the decree by the Polish Council of State. Martial law would be binding in the entire territory of Poland. The communist authorities, on the 12th of December, began arresting activists from the oppostion and the Solidarity movement. In just a few days, 49 internment centres were filled with about 5,000 people. Curfew was sat from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. and enforced by the militia. People were required to have special permission to travel beyond their area of residence. School and university classes were cancelled and restrictions were implemented severely restricting civil libertiesof Poland's citizens. For example, all correspondence was subject to official censorship. Some of the most important institutions and places of work were placed under military control in which 8,000 military commissars were in control. On the 31st of December 1982, the martial law was suspended and on the 22nd of July, 1983 was it was cancelled. The United States and other Western countries protested against the repressive measures taken in Poland, but some of them lingered for years to come.

Climate talks in Katowice enter crunch time, NGOs call for action

About 100 members of NGOs and civic groups gathered in the main hall of the Spodek arena on Friday where the UN climate talks are entering their final stretch and demanded action from ministers who continued to work around the clock after a draft agreement was produced overnight.
