Who's in charge now? Chaos as Supreme Court law enters into force

Who's now officially in charge of the Supreme Court? The Polish President's staff has said that it's judge Józef Iwulski. However, the judge himself says that the President did not bestow such duties upon him. Professor Małgorzata Gersdorf, the First President of the Supreme Court has allocated judge Iwulski to fulfill her duties in her absence, but only because she's planning to take a vacation. Judge Gersdorf continues to be the first President, assured Judge Iwulski, and added that he's not taking over.

Conflict over Polish Supreme Court law escalates

This is one of the biggest crises in modern Polish history. According to a new law, the first president of the Supreme Court, Małgorzata Gersdorf is, from Wednesday on, retired. According to professor Gersdorf herself, nothing has changed. And to prove that point she showed up to work. However, it wasn't business as usual as she was greeted by hundreds, maybe more, who oppose the new law. They say, the new law is a threat to democracy.

"The European sovereignty cannot imply building the European Union at the expense of the member states’ strength, for the strength of the sovereign Europe stems from the strength of its members," said Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki in the European Parliament during the debate on the future of the EU.

Scientists are warning that, if it leaks, it could cause an ecological disaster. The oil could make it onto the beaches of the region and harm the environment. They say action must be taken now.

The Polish people deserve an independent judiciary, says former Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk. Mr Tusk, who now is the president of the European Council, has added that he doesn't wish to comment on current events but has stressed that those who challenge judicial independence are doing harm to the citizens.

Presidential minister: according to the law, chief justice Gersdorf enters into retirement

Poland's President Andrzej Duda has confirmed that Supreme Court chief Małgorzata Gersdorf will retire on July 4, in line with legislation introduced by the ruling Law and Justice party, an aide to Duda said on Tuesday. The legislation enforcing the retirement of some Supreme Court judges, including the tribunal's chief, is at the centre of a conflict between Poland and the European Union.

The police demand pay increase. In protest, they will stop writing speeding tickets

The police want better pay and are threatening to go soft on speeding drivers. This was the final warning. On July 10th police will stop writing tickets. Instead, they will give people reprimands. The strikers are demanding a 650 zloty raise, fully paid sick leave, higher overtime rates, bonuses for work during national holidays and, most of all, they want the government to restore the old retirement system from before the 2012 reform.

Mr Giedryś is a bus driver in Łódź and he makes sure that his passengers have a nice trip by playing them the sounds of singing birds. He recorded the sounds in the Bieszczady mountains and now plays them for those who are on their way to work or home. He's a rare bird and the passengers love it.

Adam Małysz got his Bachelor's degree

He's one of the most famous Polish athletes. Now, he can be proud not only of his many gold medals, but also of his Bachelor's degree. The ski jumping great Adam Małysz says taking his final exam was all but as stresful as ski jumping itself. He studied tourism for 3 years and wrote his thesis on promoting his hometown of Wisła. He was talked into studying by rally driver Jakub Brzeziński. Now, they both say that they might try and get a Master's degree.
