U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi met with Polish President Andrzej Duda on Monday (May 2) at the Presidential Palace in Warsaw. She then laid flowers at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and met with her Polish counterpart, Speaker of the Sejm Elżbieta Witek.
Pelosi's office issued a statement saying that the U.S. delegation "came to Poland to send an unmistakable message to the world: that America stands firmly with our NATO allies in our support for Ukraine."
In the meeting officials discussed how they could further work together to support Ukraine.
After the meeting with Duda, Pelosi went to Piłsudski Square and laid flowers at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
She later told reporters that discussions she has had so far in Warsaw pertained to humanitarian aid, security and economic support for the region.
Pelosi then went on to meet with her Polish counterpart, Speaker of the Sejm Elżbieta Witek.
Pelosi met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy in Kyiv on Sunday (May 1).
After flying over to Rzeszów, Poland, she said at a news conference that America stood with Ukraine. "We stand with Ukraine until victory is won," she stressed.
"Do not be bullied by bullies if they're making threats, you cannot back down," said Pelosi, the highest-ranking U.S. official to visit Ukraine since Russia invaded on February 24.
She also condemned Russian President Vladimir Putin's "diabolic invasion."
"We're in the process of something stronger than Lend-Lease (Ukrainian Democracy Defense Lend-Lease Act) right now. We are not lending or leasing. We are giving support in a very strong way. And the Lend-Lease will not just be for Ukraine, but also for Eastern European countries who are assisting. So it will be as we see where it would be most effective. But we will be ready," Nancy Pelosi added.
President Joe Biden asked Congress to approve the aid package on Thursday (April 28) in what would mark a dramatic escalation of U.S. funding for Ukraine.
Moscow calls its actions a "special military operation" to disarm Ukraine and rid it of anti-Russian nationalism fomented by the West. Ukraine and the West say Russia launched an unprovoked war of aggression.
